What subspecies is this?
[edit]Is it a Canis lupus familiaris or a Canis lupus dingo?

Dispersed by Romans?
[edit]On many dog breed websites, it says that the Canaan dog was used by the Israelites to herd and guard, but the dogs were dispersed into the Negev Desert after the Romans invaded Israel and dispersed the Israelites 2000 years ago. How true is this? (Some other websites omit this part.) Should this be added to the article? --194.168.169.164 (talk) 15:24, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
- Please refer to using WP:RELIABLE sources rather than using something that you may have read on a website. William Harristalk 08:55, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Unidentified reference
[edit]There are some references that are just a plain link, but to an identifiable website (e.g. [3] that refers to Britannica). However, [4] refers to an archived copy of an article from an unidentified source (there's no journal name nor publisher), and I failed to find the article elsewhere online. I believe it should be removed or replaced with another reference, if found. The-herod (talk) 11:21, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Lede reconfiguration
[edit]The fact that this breed was found in Syria 9000 years ago doesn't seem important enough to put in the first paragraph of the lede. Not sure where it should go, open to suggestions. Fyukfy5 (talk) 12:32, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
Re: Canaan Dog
[edit](moved from my talk page) Hey Sean, don't want to get into an edit war about the source for the Canaan dog being in Palestine. I have no issue with that statement but the source itself is bad, currently it either takes you to this page which isn't anything or this page which is under construction. I'm going to get rid of the source for now and leave the sentence alone because I haven't been able to find a source online that actually lists the territories of the breed in full. Fyukfy5 (talk) 12:29, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Fyukfy5. Actually, the only reason I reverted was because it being a PDF wasn't a great reason to remove the source. I have no view on the quality of the source, whether it qualifies as a reliable source. That would be a reason to remove the source, unreliability. But what do you mean by 'this page which isn't anything'? I can see the archived magazine article from that link. The original page isn't online anymore. You can also see the article on page 44 here. To be clear, I didn't just revert. I replaced the archive.org link with a https://archive.today/TZO4I link. Sean.hoyland (talk) 12:52, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Weird when I use that first link it takes me to an nginx website that is all but empty except for a couple of links to their home page but it must be an issue on my end. If it works for other people I have no issue with it. Fyukfy5 (talk) 14:17, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- It's probably not you, it's probably archive.today's nginx installation messing up. Sean.hoyland (talk) 14:39, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Screendump [1]. Sean.hoyland (talk) 07:08, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- The last link works but it takes me to an archive for a sports reference? Traumnovelle (talk) 08:14, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Typo. How about now https://archive.today/TZO4I Sean.hoyland (talk) 08:21, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Works fine, although I do believe a better source such a breed encyclopaedia should be relied on for the claim of origin and where it is found. Traumnovelle (talk) 08:29, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Academic sources would be nice. Sean.hoyland (talk) 08:48, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Most of the scholarly sources I see only mention Israel and British Mandatory Palestine which isn't modern day Palestine. The question is does Palestine even need a source? No one's doubting that the Canaan dog currently lives there and that it's historic territory overlapped with it but no other country or territory listed save for ancient Syria has a source. Fyukfy5 (talk) 11:39, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I will say where a dog is currently found is never mentioned in other dog breed articles unless it relates to ownership statistics. I'd be in favour of removing the other territories and mentioning the country of origin for the standardised breed as Israel and the landrace as the Palestine/Israel region. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:52, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- That's a good point but the Canaan dog isn't a typical breed that was invented 100 years ago, it's basically a wild dog breed. Just like non-domesticated animals' articles mention their natural territory it makes sense to have the Canaan dog's natural territory for that same reason. But I could go either way, it is the national dog of Israel and certainly an Israeli breed as nearly all sources mention. Fyukfy5 (talk) 21:28, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- There is a modern standardised breed for it today and this article discusses that. Traumnovelle (talk) 21:35, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Im well aware, I'm just giving a counter argument to show that it's not so cut and dry and why it doesn't need to follow the exact template of other breeds. There's no natural territory for pugs and rottweilers, there is a natural territory for Canaan dogs. But maybe that fact doesn't belong in the first paragraph of the lede.
