Status as a "covert detention facility"

[edit]

Camp Eggers's status as a secret detention center seems well-sourced; it is inappropriate to simply delete source statements just because they conflict with what LJA believes to be true. Perhaps these things happened before or after his own stay there; it is also possible that the Afghan intelligence officials cited in the NYT/IHT article were privy to information that LJA wasn't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Whiskey Pete (talkcontribs) 15:26, 2006 November 30

Well if you were here, and could see the layout of the base, and how it's constructed... you'd understand LJA's comments. There just isn't enough space here! The place is just way too small to host any "covert detention facility." Not only that, but the logistics behind transporting/holding/keeping "detainees" makes keeping secret the fact that you HAVE detainees IMPOSSIBLE on a base this small.

This base is a lose jumble of residential homes rented from a local land owner. It's about the size of a small town block, less than 1/4 of a square mile. It's located in the middle of one of the busiest parts of the city, a good 20 minute drive through traffic from the Kabul International. Logic suggests that if one were to covertly hide a bunch of prisoners, one would pick one of the more remote places. If I were in doing it, I would put them in their own wing in the Pul-i-Charki Prison well outside of Kabul. There simply isn't enough actual evidence to support defacing the article about this little base with the macabre. Due to the rampant and common corruption of the average MIDLEVEL official in Afghanistan, they usually aren’t as privy to information as Whiskey Pete obviously believes. In a land having such a history of conflict, corruption is more of a survival tactic and those committing it don’t see it as so morally wrong.
It is inappropriate to simply delete first person statements in lieu of conspiracy theorizing, and basing an entire article on one NYT article that said midlevel officials indicated Camp Eggers as a possible detention site. Shame on you. I don’t care if you reword or reconstruct or take credit away from me, as I don’t care, as long as it’s true and not just some news jockeys opinion. Very respectfully, - someone who’s spent considerable time at the location in question.

LJA, I agree with you whole-heartedly with the current trend of demonizing the efforts to rebuild this country, and of the liberal media seeing black-cloak operatives everywhere (unfortunately it sells better to the masses). However, one must remember that Wikipedia has a policy about no original research. What you and I both know to be true, that Eggers does not have "covert detention facilities", cannot be inserted into the article because of the policy on no original research. If it was reported via cnn.com or another news article then it could be added in, as it would be a reference source. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find anything online that disputes the claim of "covert detention facilities" at Eggers; conversely, I've not been able to find any other reference that supports the claim of "covert detention facilities" besides the NYT article. I want to ensure that Wikipedia policies are supported while ensuring that the truth is upheld. I'm not trying to be at odds with you at all, as I too am at Eggers, and I cannot find any evidence whatsoever supporting the NYT's--ahem--"journalism."

First: Sorry for my bad english, im from germany, so please forgive me.

I've been to Camp Eggers in November and December 2005, and there is no space for such a compound. The only space for such a compound in camp eggers would be a underground compound, and that would be to much work and there are alot of better places for such a CIA compound in Afghanistan.

Remove from USMC Oversea Base List

[edit]

Shouldn't be listed under USMC bases. Never operated by USMC BuzzLightyearWi (talk) 15:24, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I couldn't find any category in the article saying that. However the base hosted Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan and Combined Joint Task Force 180 so it was possbile that USMC personnel were based there. Gavbadger (talk) 17:26, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
