Possible DYK hook

[edit]

DYK ... that Camil Doua could not qualify for Mauritania at the 2020 Summer Olympics as he would have had to give up his French citizenship?

That would be reasonably interesting, I would have thought. If you concur, would you mind adding something about him to the Mauritania at the 2020 Summer Olympics article? Another one of those skinny "foo at the YYYY Summer Olympics" GAs that don't have enough depth to really be a GA in my humble opinion. Schwede66 02:41, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Schwede66: Before I nominate: for the source, I'm using Google Translate and the translation reads: "'As I have dual French and Mauritanian nationality, I thought I could represent Mauritania, but at the time I had to give up French but that was not an option' ... [later in 2023] 'I then learned that the Mauritanian law concerning dual nationals had changed.' Camil then jumped on a plane to the headquarters of the Olympic Committee. Sensitive to its history, and especially to its determination, its president Abderrahmane Ethmane placed his trust in him, 'in any case they had nothing to lose'. In less than two months, his papers were done: the Parisian dream had just come true." Just want to make sure: am I accurately reading the translation? I'd say so. Abderrahmane Ethmane is president of the Comité National Olympique et Sportif Mauritanien, which would support your interpretation. I'd ask for a native French speaker to cast their eye over this source as part of the DYK review, though. Schwede66 03:20, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    OK – good. I'll nominate it shortly. BeanieFan11 (talk) 03:22, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Translated, per Google Translate "As I have dual French and Mauritanian nationality, I thought I could represent Mauritania, but at the time I had to give up French but that was not an option ... • Spotted this on WT:DYK, was going to drive-by but I see I got beaten to it by several hours. Armed only with the knowledge that 'there is an interesting hook in that article', I would have proposed ALT1 ... that the Olympic swimmer Camil Doua represents a country in which "the only existing swimming pools are those in hotels"?--Launchballer 05:57, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I like that one – I think my preference is for ALT1 now. Thanks for the suggestion! BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:56, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • For the reviewer, the source for ALT1 is the same Sud-Ouest piece: "'En Mauritanie, il n’y a que le football. La natation ? Il n’existe pas d’infrastructures, les seuls piscines existantes sont celles des hôtels', révèle Camil. Difficile dans ces conditions de former des nageurs de premier plan. Voire des nageurs tout court." – translated – "'In Mauritania, there is only football. Swimming ? There is no infrastructure, the only existing swimming pools are those in hotels,' reveals Camil. Difficult in these conditions to train top-notch swimmers. Or even just swimmers." BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:59, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • New, well-written, interesting, both hooks verified (yes, I also verified the French original, the translations provided are good) -- preferring the ALT; no plagiarism to speak of. Only waiting on the QPQ to wrap this up. Dahn (talk) 18:36, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
