Co-ordinates

The co-ordinates given (28.994°S 148.9473°E) in the box at the right puts the site about 570m N of the Qld-NSW border, and about 1.19km WNW (a bearing of 298°) of where 29°S meets the Barwon river.

The link to the Qld heritage site gives the co-ordinates as 28.99510097°S, 148.94380404°E - which puts the post closer to the border (440m) - but about 1.45km (on a bearing of 288°) from the river/29th parallel!

Google maps gives the co-ordinates as 28.998917°S, 148.957669°E; i.e. about 10m north of the 29th parallel, and about 35m from the river/29th parallel. These seem the best fit, because the photo of the site (in the box at the right) clearly shows water close by ... so it seems that the post is actually on the west bank of the river and close to it. @Prisoner of Zenda: At one level I can explain what's happening. The heritage protection applies to this area of land rather than the square metre of land that the post itself occupies. This usually means they are trying to protect the surrounding area for archeological purposes as other indications of Cameron may be present. The coords in the heritage register will usually be the calculated centroid of that area rather than post itself. This issue has arise in a number of these heritage-listed places and we usually just fix the coords in the article to the coords of the specific place of interest (that is, the post rather than the larger area). My own photo of the post has coords -28.999053333333332, 148.95792333333333 in the EXIF data (which will be my position when the photo was taken rather than the coords of the post itself but I was only a couple of metres away). Looking on Queensland Globe (the Qld Govt spatial info system), both of our coords are very close together, near the river BUT curiously outside of the heritage boundary which is to the north. Both our coords sit in the "cut out" bit at the lower right of the rightmost green area in that little map above (where the heritage boundary isn't right down to the river) and when I look at the aerial imagery, I think we are correct as I can see the road you drive along to get there, I can see the river (and I have photos of the river too, albeit not uploaded to Commons), so every indication to me is that the post itself is outside its heritage boundary which make no sense. I might write to the heritage people and see what they say about this. But in the meantime if you want to change the coords, go ahead for reasons I say above about the centroid.
