promotion / copyvio

[edit]

I've removed a significant amount of information copy/pasted from http://calibre-ebook.com/about as a WP:COPYVIO. It was also highly promotional. Please don't restore it. Toddst1 (talk) 14:30, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To convert external content sources calibre supports the RSS-Feedreader protocol What kind of protocol is that? What's the advantage of using that protocol over just reading a feed over HTTP?--88.73.15.93 (talk) 16:26, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Version list

[edit]

It would be useful to have a version list, clarifying what versions are compatible with what operating systems (e.g., it is impossible to find what is the latest Calibre version compatible with OSX Leopard, non-intel, also on the Calibre website). "Python and C (Qt)"

[edit]

First of all there is no such thing as a Qt app written in C; the library itself is C++. I am looking through the git repo and so far I don't see any C code. Lots and lots of Python. A small amount of C++. But no C.

OK, now I've run a script:

19,103 lines of .c code in 36 files.
45,267 lines of .cpp code in 85 files.
389,090 lines of .py code in 1231 files.

A large amount of the .c and .cpp files seem to be external libraries packaged together with the code (examples: unrar, LZX codec, qtcurve).

To call it a "Python and C" project still sounds a bit odd.

Content server

[edit]

Why is there no mention at all of the Calibre content server? I consider the OPDS client built into calibre to be one of its primary features. There's also no mention of wireless syncing, though this is a more recent addition. 208.127.80.202 (talk) 22:42, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

'phone home' reference doesn't match text.

[edit]

'This phone home behavior cannot be disabled, per Kovid Goyal's request.[7]' Perhaps the link has changed, but the link not only does not indicate any such request, the no was to moving an option into a separate preferences / update area. So, I don't understand how this sentence is warranted or authoritated, nor the particular reference given. Not to say the sentence is wrong, merely 'unproven', as presented. (But would have liked to see a 'good' reference, as the inability to turn off updating and any justification for such would be interesting to read.)

Sales pitch?

[edit]

This article does read a bit too much like a sales pitch. I know people are really fond of this program but writing glowingly isn't really helping. I don't know enough about how it works to edit it. 203.34.60.142 (talk) 00:43, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lowercase

[edit]

Hi User:Philg88, I see the primary source(s) uses lowercase, but secondaries like TechRepublic, Wired use uppercase. Per WP:LOWERCASE / WP:NCCAPS / WP:AT / WP:COMMONNAME is there consensus for the lowercase? In the meantime, I'm going to revert to our default upper. Widefox; talk 13:06, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Widefox: No big deal, but I have the application running as we speak and it is most indubitably "calibre" in the title bar.  Philg88 talk 14:53, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
yup, me too - they style themselves lowercase. If secondary sources since the lowercase rename have followed then we should revert to lowercase. Regards Widefox; talk 15:19, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Widefox: Agreed. I'll leave it in your capable hands you to do the necessary.  Philg88 talk 05:17, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Kovid Goyal

[edit]

Who can explain why there is no WP-article about Kovid G.? --Delabarquera (talk) 11:42, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What Reliable sources have been written about him? --Cameron Scott (talk) 12:37, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He is rich and famous and could hire someone to write an article for him, if he wanted to. The fact that he hasn't suggests he would rather spend his money elsewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.80.118.87 (talk) 19:35, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a horrible program

[edit]

This is a horrible program. It insists on using its own proprietary "library". The "libraries" in Windows are bad enough. This is a total nightmare. I can't even open a file in this program. Absolutely unacceptable. ---Dagme (talk) 10:45, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
