"Controversy" section

[edit]

This section needs expansion and work by an interested editor. In particular, I'm puzzled by the phrase "the prevailing view of Calhoun was that of an exceptional statesman and principled Senator." Given the lionization of Calhoun's nemesis Daniel Webster in New England to this day, it seems unlikely that this sentence describes the prevailing view in the 30s. It may well be the case that celebrating an anti-abolitionist did not attract as much notice at the time as it would later, but that's very different from asserting that Calhoun was particularly admired, which I'm not convinced he was (other than as a Yalie who had been somebody important at one time). I know that there's been lots of work on this issue and surely some reliable sources could be tracked down. Thanks. Chick Bowen 21:14, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Calhoun College (Yale University)Calhoun College – The move made by BoringHistoryGuy may help some readers understand the affiliation of Calhoun College with Yale University, but is not consistent with WP:D. "Calhoun College" is the only topic using this name, and further disambiguation isn't necessary. I believe the lead sentence appropriately clarifies the relationship between the college and Yale University. Nickknack00 (talk) 13:32, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Evidence of embarrassing history is perhaps too hard to find.

[edit]

The article aptly describes the most shocking of several stained glass windows honoring the Grave Hopper College's former namesake, as showing "a black man in shackles kneeling before Calhoun," and how Yale replaced that portion of window by innocuous white clouds, in response to complaints by alumnus Chris Rabb. But images of this window in its original state, unlike the new version, are hard to find on the Internet. Can anyone document possible efforts by Yale to sanitize the Internet of these images? If there has been such an effort, does Yale keep the original window panels somewhere, or a photograph of them, perhaps in a locked room in one of its libraries? In either case such information would be a worthwhile addition to the article. One can well understand Yale's desire to avoid making the image too easily accessible online for exploitation by white supremacists, but for it to have become so inaccessible suggests a less noble motive, namely the desire to cover up an embarrassing part of Yale's history.CharlesHBennett (talk) 12:44, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Coat Of Arms

[edit]

Coat of Arms should be updated. The arms pictured are of Calhoun college. Grace Hopper has a different coat of arms. See: https://gracehopper.yalecollege.yale.edu/college/coat-arms Ehgarrick (talk) 19:57, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
