Page creation

[edit]

I have created this page as a successor to the previous page for CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, since the latter no longer exists as an official entity (name + scope changed in 2014), incorporating and updating content previously at that page. Note, as originally created, the new entity was named the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Flagship; the term "flagship" was subsequently officially dropped in 2015 (ref. is https://csiropedia.csiro.au/marine-and-atmospheric-research-2005/), although not all official documents and web pages currently reflect this change.Tony 1212 (talk) 02:15, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Declaration of former interest / NPOV

[edit]

As the principal author of this page at time of writing, I should declare that I was an employee of the CSIRO Business Unit / former Division(s) in question between 1986 and 2014 when we parted amicably. I have no special inside knowledge of events post this time (especially the controversy around proposed and actual cuts to Climate Science in 2016) and trust that I have reported these events (based upon media reports) with sufficient neutrality. If anyone feels I have erred too much in favour of one side or the other they are welcome to raise the matter on this talk page, preferably prior to any substantive edits to the section in question. O&A - gone (merged), Dec 2022

[edit]

I see from its lack of a website as at now, plus a press release from December 2022 National science agency supercharges environmental focus with new business unit, that O&A has now been merged (along with Land & Water) into a new CSIRO "Environment" Business Unit. My feeling is that this page should be retained as a description of the former Marine and Atmospheric activities / heritage of CSIRO, not simply redirected to a future "Environment" page if such is created, but others may differ. Just recording my thoughts on the matter in case they are of any interest to others. Tony 1212 (talk) 07:10, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research have its own article?

[edit]

The Division/Flagship/Business Unit "CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere" existed only from 2014-2022, before disappearing into a new Business Unit simply called "Environment", see previous note. When I made the present O&A page in 2017, I simply moved material previously created under "CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research" (CMAR), its predecessor, which seemed logical since basically the process was largely (but not completely) just an identity change. However the same does not really apply on the demise of O&A, since its successor is now a different / larger beast, which is why my (present) feeling is that this page should continue to exist in its own right, to describe the historical activities of the Division (Business Unit) while it was called O&A. However now I am also wondering whether the same should apply for its predecessor CMAR (2005-2014), since there is little now on this page (except a list of notable scientists, most of whom were notable during the CMAR era anyway) that describes CMAR's activities prior to 2014 (although that could be changed) ... however that is in itself complicated, since previous to CMAR, Atmospheric Research was its own Division and CMAR was just Marine Research (CMR) (1997-2005); previous to that it was 2 Divisions again (Fisheries, and Oceanography, i.e. DF and DO); and previous to that the two were 1 Division anyway (DFO). So a couple of options - (1) create small/stub pages for each of these entities as they existed for a certain period, that could later be expanded by anyone interested; or (2) create an expanded "History" section on this page, with a subsection for each precursor of O&A, its duration, perhaps other information either now or in the future from historic accounts. BTW Atmospheric Research had its own history as well, including absorbing a number of smaller Divisions/Units along the way, I believe, refer https://csiropedia.csiro.au/marine-and-atmospheric-research-2005/ for more details. Thoughts, anyone? Tony 1212 (talk) 19:44, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
