Population Count
[edit]The population count of Butterworth on this page is inconsistent. While it is stated multiple times that the city has a population of 71,463, the infobox has it listed as 818,197. However, all of this is made more dubious by the fact that the 2010 census that this article is quite reliant upon does not contain any information about Butterworth in the first place. I have provided an updated population count of the city by using World Population Review as my reference; I'm not sure about the validity of this source, and being a new user, it would be great if some veterans would be able to jump in and help me on this. Miscellaneous
[edit]"RapidPenang has done dramatic changes.Butterworth is getting a new jetty (Penang Sentral) & monorail service."
This is not very accurate. No monorail was ever planned. Please delete this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Adaml11600 (talk • contribs) 07:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Story of name?
[edit]<sigh> Apparently, nobody thought there was any need to explain how it is that a town in Malaysia came to be named "Butterworth". I assume it dates to the British colonial era - but still, it sure would be nice to know the story. I mean, it's not as though there are scads of other Malaysian towns with English names -- so this one sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. Cgingold (talk) 06:53, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- PS - It just dawned on me that the line "To many locals, Butterworth is known as Bagan" quite likely means that the original (some might say "real") name of the town is "Bagan". Perhaps I'm wrong, but this whole business strikes me as a sorry case of the colonial mentality still at work. <sigh> Cgingold (talk) 07:26, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
