The article suggets that Kilrain was based on the 20th Maine's Sergeant George Buck. Other than Kilrain dying of wounds on 3 July, the rest of the story does not compute for me although next time I watch the DVD I will take closer note. I had assumed, although, I have seen no reference that suggests this, that Kilrain may have been partly based on Sergeant Andrew J Tozier the other 20th Maine MofH recipient that day. His citation reads ‘At the crisis of the engagement this soldier, a color bearer, stood alone in an advanced position, the regiment having been borne back, and defended his colors with musket and ammunition picked up at his feet.’ While Tozier appears in the movie standing with the colors it is Kilrain who defends ‘with musket and ammunition picked up at his feet’.
