Origin of the name

[edit]

Was King George I of Great Britain was born in Braunschweig? According to the English Wikipedia and Britannica, he was born in Osnabrück. According to the German Wikipedia, he was born in Hanover, which makes sense, because his father's official residence, the Leineschloss, was and is in Hanover. In any event, I suspect the town was named after his ducal house; he and his forbears had been dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg since the 13th century. Adamgarrigus (talk) 21:31, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That makes sense, of course. Edit in your more specific and more accurate phrasing. --Wetman (talk) 21:34, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
These book reference I used, along with this site from the North Carolina Office of Archives and History says King George was a native of Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany. I assumed native meant he was born there, but I could be wrong. Either way, the city was named after King George's relationship with the German town. APK yada yada 22:06, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Those sources are both about the history of North Carolina. Quoting from the first: "The name evoked the German roots of England's King George I [...]". That's not making a claim about the monarch's birthplace. The advisable source would be a biography of the monarch himself. In any event, I'll go ahead & edit. "North Carolina was a colony of England, and the town was named Brunswick to honor George I, the king of England, who was a native of Brunswick, Germany." - That's also from one of the sources and the reason I said it was his birthplace. Change it if you like. I wasn't really focusing on trivial details not directly related to the subject, so I just used the references that dealt with the town. BTW, it really pisses me off when I get one of the "database locked" messages. It just happened and I had to retype this crap. APK yada yada 03:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
