My late mother, Philippa Seligman was instrumental in creating BUSW (British Union of Social Workers). She became its first Chair. This made her probably the first woman to chair a British trade union, albeit a small one which never affiliated to the TUC. I attach the first page of the minutes of the Executive Committee that was elected (I believe) at the founding meeting held on the same day, February 24th, 1979, and the subsequent initial Press Release issued on February 28th 1979. Unfortunately, I do not have the rest of the minutes, but they can be found in the BASW archive, see https://mrc.epexio.com/records/BSW/4/30/1/13. Philippa Seligman progressed from social work to Systemic Family Psychotherapy, and was a founder member of the Association for Family Therapy (AFT), duly becoming national chairperson of that organisation.
