July 2024 page updates[edit]

Hi Wikipedia editors. I have a personal tie to Brian Rush, the subject of this article. I have a few suggested corrections for his page to bring it closer to a standard Wikipedia page. I understand I can’t edit the page directly under Wikipedia conflict of interest policy, so I am making my proposal here, as instructed by WP:UPE. Please take a look at my suggestions listed below.

1. Please add an “Early life and education” section, which is currently missing from the article, according to examples seen in Good Articles about politicians like [1] and [2].

2. First, please add the following content this section:

Rush was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida.[1] He attended the University of Florida, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1980.[2] Rush graduated from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 1982.[2]

3. The “Political career” section should be removed and become the first 3 paragraphs of the “Professional career” section, and the “Professional career” section should be renamed “Career.” This would 1) put the events of Rush’s career in chronological order, and 2) follow the Wikipedia naming conventions exemplified by the Career sections of Good Articles about politicians like [3] and [4] who had careers in the private sector in addition to their service in government.

Furthermore, it would break chronological order in order to place a controversy at the top of the page. As it stands now, this reads more like an attack page.

4. Please move this sentence from “Professional Career” to be the first sentence of the new Career section so it will be in chronological order. I have revised it so it includes a reliable source and more detail about his specialty and location. It should go from:

Rush worked as an attorney.[3]


To:

Rush worked as a trial lawyer in Carrollwood, Florida.[4]


5. In the Career section, the sentence that begins “In 2021, Rush was accused of wrongdoing” cites Law360, but that date is incorrect - this event occurred in 2022.[5] I rewrote the sentence, along with the two sentences that follow it, to include the correct dates for the case, with supporting sources, and summarized the event for clarity. Please change that sentences from:

In 2021, Rush was accused of wrongdoing in a 2018 eminent domain case.

To:

In February 2022, a Florida judge recommended Rush be suspended from the Florida Bar for three years,[5]alleging Rush had violated the bar’s rules of conduct while representing developers in an eminent domain case in 2018.[1]

6. In the “Career” section, the two sentences “The Florida Supreme Court ruled against Rush in 2023…” and “On July 27, 2023, Rush resigned his license to practice law…” are cited entirely to court documents. WP:BLPPRIMARY says “Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person.”

In the proposed sentence below, I added an article from the Palm Beach Post to replace the primary source of the Supreme Court filing. For the last sentence, I added an article from the Daytona Beach News-Journal, and then I rewrote the sentence to reflect the information in that article. In April 2024, there was news about Rush getting authorization to pursue an antitrust lawsuit, so I added two sentences, with the citation from the Daytona Beach News-Journal, to help make the article current. Please replace those two sentences with:

The Florida Supreme Court upheld the suspension of Rush in May 2023.[6][7] Rush retired from his law practice in 2023.[1] In 2024, Rush told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that he had filed a federal court complaint and received authorization to pursue a federal antitrust lawsuit against the Florida Bar and the Florida Department of Transportation.[1]
