The given analytical solutions (and animations) are original research, not provided in the cited reference. Boussinesq approximation (water waves) provides more background on the subject. Crowsnest (talk) 14:30, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
- No expert, but this article (Boussinesq approximation (water waves)) does look better written with actual content. Currently it looks like a pointless WP:FORK. A merge looks like a good solution. M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 08:30, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
- If the analytic solutions and animations are OR, what are you proposing to merge? Only the equation and reference would be left. I don't have access to the second edition of Handbook of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, but the first edition does have some analytic solutions to a Boussinesq type equation. If user-generated animations like those in Boussinesq type equation are OR, we should remove the animation File:Bous2d berk03 z.gif in this article, too. --Mark viking (talk) 09:28, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
- By "merge" we presumably mean transfer the content of this article (Boussinesq approximation (water waves)) into Boussinesq type equation and leave a redirect in this article to that one, deleting all OR content. Or the other way round. Not set on which articles are merged into which, or any specific titles, but it seems make sense to (at least for now) to combine the two articles into one somehow. - The second edition of the handbook presents two analytical solutions to the (there used particular) Boussinesq-type equation, which are both of the form of rational functions. These are not of direct practical use. If there are indeed exact cnoidal wave solutions (in terms of the Jacobi elliptic function 'cn') that would be a more interesting extension to the article. Nonetheless, the present article lacks any sourced material on solutions to these type of equations, analytic or numerical. I agree, a merge from Boussinesq type equation would strengthen this article. There are other sources for analytic results, for instance,
- A study of the soliton solutions of the Boussinesq and other nonlinear evolution equations of fluid mechanics (a thesis, but much good information within)
- EXACT SOLUTIONS FOR A FAMILY OF BOUSSINESQ EQUATION WITH NONLINEAR DISPERSION.
