According to Constantinople#717–1025:

" In 865 an attack was made on the city by a new principality set up a few years earlier at Novgorod by Rurik, a Varangian chief: two hundred small Russian vessels passed through the Bosporus and plundered the monasteries and other properties on the suburban Prince's Islands. Oryphas, the admiral of the Byzantine fleet, alerted the emperor Michael, who promptly put the invaders to flight; but the suddenness and savagery of the onslaught made a deep impression on the citizens.[1] "


This article claims that Constantinople itself was actually sacked. This needs to be changed or have it noted that the chronicle is erroneous.--189.33.2.165 (talk) 00:14, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
