Fact Vs. opinion?

[edit]

I often find myself turning to Wikipedia these days quite regularly to seek reference and knowledge towards any given subject matter, as do most people. My belief was that Wikipedia is a convergence of information substantially based upon fact(s)? As I began reading the articles assembled and published on “ BOMBA, the jungle boy” the purported references and information gathered left me rather confounded. The aforementioned;

“A common theme of the Bomba books is that Bomba, because he is white, has a soul that is awake, while his friends, the dark-skinned natives, have souls that are sleeping. Richard A. Lupoff, in his book Master of Adventure, a study of the works of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, describes the Bomba tales as more blatantly racist than the often-criticized Tarzan books.”

Much like Mr. Lupoff I too have an opinion. However I feel his discernments in regards to fact and reference in this article is entirely irrelevant, and should be acknowledged as such, his opinion. I find it completely irresponsible for Wikipedia to allow such opinion based statements to be part of an excerpt that is meant to inform not reform? You are mistaken that Wikipedia articles are merely an accumulation of facts. Articles reflect how the topic as depicted in reliable, published sources, including opinion and other analysis. The text where Bomba believes that his soul is awake, while native souls are asleep, is published in the work itself, and is a reasonable use of a primary sources per WP:PRIMARYCARE. The published analysis of Richard A. Lupoff, a notable author and described by Wikipedia as an expert on Edgar Rice Burroughs, in a book is a secondary source that is both reliable and published.
I appreciate you have an opinion. That would be original research. Wikipedia articles must not contain original research, per WP:NOR. Davidwbaker (talk) 18:52, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
