Date

[edit]

If it was constructed in 367, an unusually precise dating, it was unlikely to be to keep mSaxons out.Adresia 15:33, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The 367 date comes from the fact that a coin dating from 364 was found in one of the early excavations and the fact that Roman sources report Britain being attacked in a supposed Great Conspiracy of barbarian tribes in 367. It is impossible to say though exactly why it was built or whether it was anything to do with a threat from Saxon tribes, and I've removed much of the speculation from the article. In fact, different bits of the dyke seem to have been built/refortified at different times, and current thinking is that it was originally a pre-Roman boundary, perhaps of the Durotriges tribe. Dorset WikiProject assessments

[edit]

I've assessed this article as being of 'Mid' importance to the above WikiProject, primarily because the construction of the Dyke was a significant development in the early history of the county, and because for nearly all of its visible length it is still the county boundary. However I can see an argument for classing it as of 'Low' importance, seeing as it doesn't impact on current Dorset residents to any great extent, and it is arguably of lesser archaeological significance than Maiden Castle or Badbury Rings. Opinions welcome... PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 17:13, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
