common name
[edit]Bogura is the common name, not Bogra TrueMoriarty (talk) 15:11, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- @TrueMoriarty: What evidence do you have that it meets Wikipedia's definition of WP:COMMONNAME? Guideline Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) explains in depth how to choose among names, including an entire section on establishing a widely accepted name. A few quick observations:
- Both Banglapedia: The National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh and Encyclopædia Britannica still use Bogra.[1][2].
- A new edition of the Times Atlas of the World was published in 2023. If you like, I can try to get hold of a copy and see what it says.
- Some national newspapers now use Bogura, others still use Bogra. Uptake internationally has probably been slower and spottier.
- Google ngram viewer is of limited value for various reasons, but can give one an idea of how common the two spellings have been. --Worldbruce (talk) 16:02, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- I don't have any proofs but I am from Bangladesh and I always hear my fellow Bangladeshis saying 'Bogura', not 'Bogra'. TrueMoriarty (talk) 06:35, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
