Bobby Cole - my dear friend

[edit]

I lived in New York on 53rd Street one flight above Bobby Cole's apartment that he shared with Jack Lonshein whenever Bobby was in town. As a teenager I would come home from school and, if I heard Bobby practicing, I would sit by his door to listen in. If he ever stopped playing, I would grab my schoolbooks and run upstairs to my place lest he catch me "spying" on him. I was terribly shy in those days. Other times, in the summer, I could hear him play through the open windows. It was heaven to hear his voice and piano and as I grew to be an adult, Bobby and I became more than friends. We lived together for many years and although we would have the occasional breakup when his baby grand piano would be moved back downstairs to Jack's place, it would inevitably be brought back upstairs when we both cooled off. Up and down, up and down. Through good times and tough times we were quite the pair and my memories of our time together are precious. His music was like nothing I had ever heard before - it was new to me every night that he played in the clubs like Ali-Baba, Jilly's, the Aratusa, Tony Roma's, and a few gigs in Pennsylvania at The Top Shelf. His music became a healing balm for a worried soul. Once in a while he would run some musical ideas past me - a great honor, and I well remember how we were trying to get the exact correct notes one day of Fat's Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz". Between all the sharp, flat, minor, and diminished notes, it was a tough haul, but a load of fun and a lot of laughs. I am so grateful that his daughter and others has put some of his music on the Internet. I have missed hearing his voice and piano for so long. I think that anyone who knew him immediately liked him - he was so full of joy, an enchanting smile, a laugh that was always contagious, and a talent second to none. He could converse on any subject on any level with anyone and was a gentleman to the hilt. His hard times were about as hard as they get but he managed to survive most everything. His death is a tragedy - too early as is the case with many artists. Sadly, I did not know him in his last years. I had moved on and so had he. So, now, from Alaska, I am able to see and hear him on the Internet and that is a blessing to all of us who were/are his fans. 22:44, 25 February 2017 (UTC) Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). personal life experiences
