Requests for comment: Indefinite semi protection

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

This page is a vandal magnet. For some reason Bob Ross and connected subject The Joy of Painting (When one page is protected the vandals just hit the other) Pending changes in this situation is just the same as no protection, we're just as busy reverting pending bad changes. I move that Bob Ross and connected subject The Joy of Painting be set to indef-semi protection. I think these pages have shown substantial justification for permanent protection, so I'm here hoping for consensus. Note:A link to this discussion has been left at The Joy of Painting Mlpearc (open channel) 15:48, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

  • not required imo but no major objection - a lot of the edits simply require reverting or rejecting but with only 500 edits in the last twelve months the page is easily workable under pending protection and is a less restrictive condition than Indefinite semi protection. Govindaharihari (talk) 19:42, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Support - The vandalism is indeed baffling, and annoying. Yes, it's relatively infrequent, but why not make it less frequent? DoctorJoeE review transgressions/talk to me! 21:07, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Comment Summoned by bot. This is not a proper use of an article RfC, which is primarily for disputes, not for this kind of situation. You need to go to WP:RPP, where I assure you that the desires of editors will not be taken into account. Permanent semiprotection is rare. Coretheapple (talk) 16:34, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
@Coretheapple: I've been to RPP and got these results Bob Ross request, Bob Ross reply, The Joy of Painting request and lastly The Joy of Painting reply which is totally fine, I have no problem with KrakatoaKatie call. I just want to try and gain consensus for indef-semi for these two pages before returning to RPP Mlpearc (open channel) 18:27, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
I wish you luck, but they don't grant indefinite semiprotection almost ever. Coretheapple (talk) 18:44, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
  • information Note: Many articles seem to have the same solution, these pages were surly getting the same onslaught of vandalism. Mlpearc (open channel) 20:19, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
  • No objection It seems odd to have this under semi protection but since its receiving relatively frequent vandalism I wont oppose such action. Fraulein451 (talk) 03:25, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Support - Can't say I've ever ran into this type of RfC before but an indefinite protection will save users time and the hassle of reverting continuous vandalism. Meatsgains (talk) 02:36, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Oppose indefinite semi-protection, but support temporary semi-protection, reverting to pending changes after a minimum of a few weeks. Good golly, from the comments, I feel like there's a class of person out there (or one really ornery person hopping IPs) whose mother expressed interest in Bob Ross just one-too-many times and the child never got over it; someone ought to tell them to keep it mellow, like some cadmium yellow. Anyway, getting to the point, I can see how this would be vexing, but the fact of the matter is that pending changes are presently keeping the vandalism from reaching our readers. That means that when we are contemplating page protection we are directly weighing the costs of excluding the contributions of good-faith IP editors against the wasted time of registered users. I'm satisfied to resolve that balancing test in the favour of our autoconfirmed contributors, but I can't see excluding well-intentioned but non-registered editors from the article indefinitely just for the sake of convenience to the rest of us. I'd like to propose that we try the semi-protection for a limited period of time (six weeks, maybe?) and then go back to pending changes and see if the clueless IP vandals have wandered away in the meantime. We might even get lucky enough to be able to remove the pending changes protection thereafter, though given the bizarre nature of the fixation of this/these vandal(s), I'm not going to hold my breath. Snow let's rap 05:01, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
@Snow Rise: The page has been semi'd or PC'd off and on for months and you want satusquo ? That won't help at this point. Mlpearc (open channel) 14:14, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
Well, as Core told you above, you're welcome to take the request to WP:RFP, A) the actual method for making this request, and B) something you would have to do anyway, even if a huge number of editors had responded, all supporting this extraordinary measure. But I'll also join Core in saying that you shouldn't get your hopes up. Indefinite protection is almost never applied, anywhere on the project, being seen as inherently at conflict with the principles that this is the "encyclopedia anyone can edit" and that it is generally not in the best interest of an article to remove all IPs from contributing to it just in order to forestall edits from vandals. It has generally only been considered (and generally rejected) in the case of high-traffic and highly controversial topics with massive numbers of editors and disruption which is exhausting the broader community's energy to contain. Here we have an article with either one (or a few) number of (admittedly persistent) vandals whose efforts are presently being completely contained by the pending changes mechanism. I just don't think you're going to get the outcome you seek. Which maybe is why you sought support here first, to bolster that request, but I for one just can't see supporting scaling up from pending changes to an indefinite lock-down; I just don't think it reflects the balance of interests here between vandals, other IPs, registered users and (most importantly) the needs of the article. But what I can do is stick around to help respond the pending changes queue. Snow let's rap 21:26, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
Ahhhh, so now I understand the origin of all of this: see the Bob Ross entry here. That goes a long way to explaining how this all started. It also reinforces to me that this is a temporary state of affairs; meme-influenced trolling can stick for a while, but it does eventually fade. Snow let's rap 21:55, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Some old page history that used to be at the title "Bob Ross" can now be found at Talk:Bob Ross/Old history. Graham87 16:11, 5 May 2016 (UTC) bob ross was married to gina

The "Ross at his easel" picture

Though probably not really important to the average reader, but probably rather important to a Bob Ross fan - - - the picture/photo is BACKWARDS ! ! !

Is there any way that can be corrected/flipped?

Just curious. 2600:8800:50B:6700:C23F:D5FF:FEC5:89B6 (talk) 03:00, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

I know on the show, Ross is usually to the left of the painting, but this probably a staged publicity photo. Mlpearc (open channel) 03:48, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 4 September 2016 for Bob Ross artical

The change I request to be made is to the Commemoration and pop culture section of the article with the edition of a fact. The fact is about a parody of Bob Ross and his PBS show the Joy of Painting in the Family guy episode Fifteen Minutes of Shame.

This is my proposal for the addition:

Bob Ross was featured in the Family Guy episode Fifteen Minutes of Shame, Peter Griffen is watching the PBS show The Joy of Painting and supposedly following his instructions to paint a landscape, however it is revealed he has painted the Keaton family from NBC's Family Ties in a parody of that show's opening titles.

Here is the source for the addition:

  • S. Callaghan, “Fifteen Minutes of Shame.” Family Guy: The Official Episode Guide Seasons 1–3. New York: HarperCollins, 2005. 86–89.

Thank you for considering this edit and have a nice day.

For inclusion in the pop culture section: On November 7, 2015, season 5, episode 22 of My Little Pony: Friendship is magic featured the character of Discord appearing as Bob Ross and painting a scene of Sweet Apple Acres, a place in the show. Later in the episode he briefly appears as Bob Ross again but this time painting a portrait of Twilight, another character in the show.

Education - left school in the 9th grade

I'm not a regular editor here, and I see there are edit protection issues, so I want to alert you to some new info about his education not in the article that I saw in a bookstore today. A small hardcover book of his quotes Happy Little Accidents: the Wit and Wisdom of Bob Ross "compiled by Michelle Witte" (a fan of his work) Running Press, Philadelphia, (c)2017 Bob Ross, Inc. ISBN 978-0-7624-6278-0, page 5, "Biography": "Although Bob lacked a formal education, it did little to hinder his success in life. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade to work with his father as a carpener. During that time he cut off one of the fingers on his left hand." GOOGLE BOOKS VERIFICATION Feel free to add this new info the article, worded as you deem proper. Thanks.5Q5 (talk) 15:53, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Motivational speaker

As I'm looking up the icons of my childhood I noticed Robert Norman Ross does not have Motivational speaker under his credentials. I'm not sure how everyone else feels about him but growing up my friends and I watched him yes for the painting but mainly because he was so motivational. He made kids and adults alike feel like their was no such thing as defeat as long as you kept trying. If that's not a motivational speaker then i dont know what is. Moving the Merchandise Picture and Adding a New One.

Personally I think a better picture of the merchandise picture should be added. There is very little Bob Ross stuff in the picture, all I can see for him are some pictures and some T-shirts. It kinda blends in and so often the first thing I see is a bunch of Pennywise merch and other stuff merch. If there is a picture that could be added of just his merchandise. Also it shouldn't belong in the "death" section but in the "legacy" section. Should I move it? B-Movie Fan (talk) 22:23, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Bob meets Bill

I'm not sure what the rules are for self-reported research, or whatever, but I discovered while reading this article that I might have something to contribute to the history of Bob Ross. Like bob, my father served a 20-year hitch in the Air Force (except my dad was an officer). From 1963-1968 he was stationed at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, where I spent my preschool through grade three years.

Sometime around 1967 I have a vivid memory of my family attending a USO-sponsored painting show held in a local rec hall on the base. There were only about 100-200 people in the audience (that number might not be accurate, since I was only 8 years old at the time, and memory of a kid is not always reliable). We sat on folding chairs sat up in a semi-circle around the painter's easel. I remember that the artist was an older gentleman who spoke with a distinct accent, and he painted rapidly while talking to the audience in a soft, gentle voice. I did not know it until reading this article, but that painter must have been Bill Alexander! And, moreover, Bob Ross must have been in attendance in the audience with us, which is where he was almost certainly exposed for the first time to Bill Alexander's painting style! The artist painted several pieces, which were then given away to audience members from a drawing (unfortunately, we didn't get one).

The article states that Bob first saw Bill Alexander's style on Bill's tv show - but in the article about Alexander, it says he didn't have a tv show until the 1970s. I am quite certain that Bob first was exposed to Bill, and first met Bill in person, during that painting demonstration at Eielson around the year 1967. If someone wants to use me as a source for the article, please feel free to do so. And please contact me if you want to talk about this. --Saukkomies talk 15:06, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Images

The only image of Ross in the article is a fair use photo in the infobox. Based on what's coming across my Facebook feed, there are plenty of official USAF photos of Ross from his 20-year career in the military floating around the web. In fact, I'm tempted to locate and upload all of them. Is there no desire on the part of others to do this because they depict a person who looks much different than he did on the PBS series? I don't get why these aren't on Commons already aside from the fact that Commons is effectively yet another dumping ground for those out to pick low-hanging fruit. The one I saw today was originally published in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. He wasn't in uniform, but the caption described Sgt. Bob Ross from the Eielson AFB clinic demonstrating painting to the residents of the Fairbanks Pioneer Home. As for the first part of your reply, a goodly part of the reason why we have 50 million-plus images on Commons is because a certain few people have obtained privileges which make mass uploading easier and have pillaged DVIDS, uploading tons of stuff with questionable educational value simply because it was in the public domain. Just an FYI there is a grammar error in the "Influence" category. Showing possession by Ross is incorrectly written as "Ross's" when it should be "Ross'". (As an aside, Jack Ross was born Herman Franklin Swindal and did not adopt the name “Jack Ross” until about 1940. As a Cherokee tribal member, it is hurtful to have non-Natives claim our culture. We respectfully request that the word “Cherokee” be removed from the Bob Ross article permanently, or until someone can provide documentation that Jack Ross was a member (or descendant of) one of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes. Thank you in advance. MitziReid (talk) 21:48, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Larger version of image?

I notice that there are larger versions of that Bob Ross image out there. Is it worth including one of them?

E.g. from Twitter or from a Google image search (note that some of those images have been modified). --100.4.148.93 (talk) 14:53, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Non-free images are supposed to be limited to a maximum of 100,000 pixels in size, hence the usage of one such image in the article. You can look for a past discussion on this talk page and realize that free images of Ross do exist, contrary to the claim offered in the non-free use rationale. The problem is that those are photos from his military career and wouldn't present an image of Ross as he is best recognized. Painting count

@Ched: re this edit, it's in the paragraph directly above. For some reason it's spelled out as "thirty thousand", which might go against MOS, I'd have to check. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:44, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

According to MOS:

Integers greater than nine expressible in one or two words may be expressed either in numerals or in words (16 or sixteen, 84 or eighty-four, 200 or two hundred). When written as words, numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated (including when part of a larger number): fifty-six or fifty-six thousand but five hundred or five thousand.

Therefore, "thirty thousand" is fine. --Diriector_Doc├─────┤TalkContribs 00:02, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Why is the image for Bob Ross so low quality? Jdietr601 (talk) 14:12, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

It is believed that the use of some images of promotional material to illustrate: the person(s), product, event, or subject in question; where the image is unrepeatable, i.e. a free image could not be created to replace it; on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation; qualifies as fair use under Copyright law of the United States. "Ross subsequently became widely known via his posthumous internet presence"

This is not a true or accurate statement, and I believe it should be re-worded. Bob Ross was VERY widely known long before he passed away, and long before the internet "took off". Many millions of viewers tuned into his syndicated show(s) each week in the early 1990's, for certain.

So ... why not say something like "<his> popularity has continued to rise since his death, in part due to the many internet venues on which he now appears" ? Whatever. Something like that. The current statement makes it sound like he was a 2nd-rate TV personality before his death, and I'm here to tell ya, it just ain't so. I/we used to watch him every weekend on PBS back in 1992 or so, and he was extremely popular. It was the one show people could watch and just chill-out. And people were talking about him as a great host and instructor, even back then.

Maybe someone could dig up the TV ratings / number of views he had back then. I'm sure the Nielsen Ratings are out there somewhere. Cheers. 73.6.96.168 (talk) 03:50, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Article underway about RSR Inc and son, Notable??

Is the creation of one (or two) new WP articles underway about RSR Inc (ie Robert Steven (aka Steve Ross) Incorporated) and son, Steve, as both pass the Notability test?? I noticed that Bob Ross' InfoBox says 'Children and has a count of 1, ..but his article does not mention Steve by name there, nor is the numeral 1 a link to a page about his son, who with Dana runs a successful paint and painting instruction company. -From Peter {a.k.a. Please fix the run-on sentence at the end of the "Personal Life" section by correcting the punctuation. Here is the current text:

Ross believed in God and frequently referred to "God's creation" and wished his viewers "God bless you" during his series, however he was not a member of any organized religion.

Inconsistent number of children throughout the article

The infobox says he has one child, but the text ("personal life" section) says he has two children. Can someone fix the textbox? (This is assuming the "personal life" section is correct... but as a reference is mentioned, I think it is).

I can't edit the article myself, because it seems to be protected from edition. Thanks. 85.169.195.108 (talk) 17:39, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Bob Ross: inconsistent number of children throughout the article

  • What I think should be changed:

The infobox should mention two children, not one child.

  • Why it should be changed:

The infobox says he has one child, but the text ("personal life" section) says he has two children. It makes the article inconsistent. The "personal life" section mentions a reference, so it's probably the personal life section which is correct, not the infobox. Thanks.

  • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button): reference mentioned in the article: [2]

Done. I've taken out Steve Ross' name in the infobox mostly because it's a red link. Could we address the weasel word and tabloidy stuff

Throwing in an “allegedly” doesn’t allow us to throw in any salacious accusation. An encyclopedia is supposed to give facts, not rumors. Under personal life, could an allowed editor please remove the "allegedly due to Ross' infidelity" and just give the fact — the marriage end — and put this quote from the cited source in the footnote:

"From his earliest days, he had issues with fidelity—like his father before him. He had fathered a child as an unmarried teen, and his first marriage had fallen apart over affairs.”

We’re not accusing him of having affairs. We’re showing what the cited source actually says, and letting the reader judge from that, rather than having the encyclopedia make a proclamation.

Whether we go this route or not, "allegedly" is a WP:WEASEL and shouldn’t be there.——-2600:1017:B8AE:E0CC:1C54:AFAC:D464:C30A (talk) 23:32, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

In the technique section is stated: "Ross used a wet-on-wet oil painting technique of painting over a thin base layer of wet paint. The painting could progress without first drying.". But it's never explained why he did that. He would put a thin layer of white wet paint to blend and move the colors he would add after. Thepatman04 (talk) 07:15, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Regarding Bob Ross’ Faith

Bob Ross was Christian. The article about him states “not a member of any specific organized religion” as a covert means to imply he wasn’t Christian, and he in fact was.

I have just watched an episode of The Joy Of Painting called "Nature's Splendor in which Bob Ross said, "Shoot if you want violence, turn the news on!" Here on Wikipedia, the line is "Shoot, if you want the bad stuff, watch the news." I believe the earlier line is more correct. 97.84.184.49 (talk) 01:34, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Is there some reason why this quotation is better in some way? The one currently in the article, (the quote starting at 17:58 here) appears to be from an earlier episode (S17E12) than the one you reference (starting at 8:15 here), which is S17E12. I would think that the earlier quote is more appropriate here unless there's a particular reason otherwise. Tollens (talk) 08:02, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
