History

Although cricket was used to be played in India on a regular basis since 1792 and sporadically even before that when British soldiers introduced the game in the country, the concept of central control of the game as was available in England or Australia was never thought of seriously till the end of World War I in 1918. As standard of the game improved in India, the Calcutta Club formed during the days of the British East Company negotiated for a tour of India by an English side. The Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC - now the International Cricket Council) allowed two of the Club's Members to attend the meeting as representatives of India. This facilitated better interaction and led to visit of Marylebone Cricket Club MCC to India. The MCC, under its captain AER Gilligan, played a number of unofficial Tests in India and was greatly impressed by the standard of Indian cricket. In 1927. Mr. Gilligan is believed to have discussed the idea of formation of Cricket control Board for India with Messrs. R E Grant Govan of the Roshanara Club, Delhi, A S de' Mellow and the Maharaja of Patiala. A Provisional Board of Control was formed in December 1927 with its headquarters in Delhi. The said Board was assigned to form territorial associations for popularization of the game. Early in 1928, Messrs. Grant Govan and de’ Mellow went to England to discuss the entry of India into ICC. Nothing tangible resulted. Nevertheless, eight territorial associations were formed at a meeting in Mumbai in December 1928 and a representative Board of Control for Cricket in India was constituted with Mr. R E Grant Govan' as the first President and Mr. A S de’ Mello as the Honorary Secretary.

In 1929 BCCI got affiliated to ICC . International tours were arranged after that . The first one was India's tour of England in 1932.The team was led by CK Nayudu. The first National Cricket Championship was the Ranji Trophy in 1932

neutrality of this article disputed?

I am still confused. On what topic is the neutrality disputed? Can I mark it as resolved? --sarvajna (talk) 10:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

I think more than neutrality, it weighed in favour of recent stuff, the historical info is just about founding (which is incomplete) - what about the 70 years in between? Also the lists need to be moved out of the article. Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 11:06, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Citation

Does'nt this statement require a citation?

"This is India's richest sporting body and one of the richest sports team or body in the whole world."

Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 06:59, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Why not just add these references instead of talking about them? I don't see why there should be 6 years between the talk page discussion and the article being updated accordingly. Tripnoted (talk) 03:12, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Is the BCCI really one of the world's wealthiest organizations in sport? Bigger than US sports organizations, FIFA or UEFA? When you think about it the there are players in American sports who's contracts are bigger than the $612 million paid Nimbus for broadcasting rights? I think some numbers need to provided here to comparatively assess its wealth as cricket is financially a relatively poor sport especially when compared to NFL, MLB or NHL.

They mean that It is the richest sporting body in India. Solar Police►Talk 08:14, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Lead

What does "It's not the apex governing body in India." from the lead paragraph mean? I tried googling the term, but no luck. Tripnoted (talk) 02:59, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Removed it. Something like that should not be the second line in the lead. Tintin 03:14, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
  • I don't trust this line too - "The board was formed in December 1928 as BCCI replaced Calcutta Cricket Club." It seems to imply that CCC was in charge of cricket in India before and that doesn't sound believable at all. Tintin
CCC reps attended an ICC meeting in London in 1928 (see [www.bcci.tv/bcci/bccitv/index/history]). Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 09:26, 10 March 2012. (UTC)

removing POV tag with no active discussion per Template:POV

I've removed an old neutrality tag from this page that appears to have no active discussion per the instructions at Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. Remove this template whenever:
  1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved
  2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given
  3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Since there's no evidence of ongoing discussion, I'm removing the tag for now. If discussion is continuing and I've failed to see it, however, please feel free to restore the template and continue to address the issues. 2019 President Ganguly etc.

Please stop changing the office holders in infobox until they are actually announced (even if there has been a backroom deal to agree it all). According to Cricinfo the election of Ganguly won't take place until 23 October, so he is not president until at least then. Spike 'em (talk) 08:49, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Make redirect of BCCI word to this article.

Most of the time Board for Control Cricket in India is referred to as BCCI. If we do redirect it will be easier for readers to find this article. @DexServer: Newton Euro (talk) 18:04, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Jurisdiction of the Sports ministry

Does the sports ministry really have jurisdiction over the BCCI? Neither has Parliament passed a law to this effect no has the Supreme Court passed any orders. The cited source simply mentions that the Chief Information Commission ruled that the BCCI is a Public Authority under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act (after going through SCI orders, Law Commission reports etc). I doubt this results in Jurisdction being granted to the Sports Ministry over the BCCI. Abhijeetviswa (talk) 11:15, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

The article for Cricket Australia says it's jurisdiction is Australia, then why this article don't mention BCCI jurisdiction is India. Probably BCCI under M of U&A. But this board is registered as NGO. Newton Euro (talk) 05:15, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Former presidents

@Wjemather: are you aware about this sub? Do you have any idea of who is Jagmohan Dalmiya was? You reverted properly sourced edit. You should discuss here before doing reverts.Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 17:10, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

@Rock Stone Gold Castle: There are two issues: First, you added the content to a section titled "Match-fixing scandal" instead of the organisation section; more importantly though, the content itself falls foul of policy, namely WP:NPOV (specifically WP:UNDUE), as it lends undue prominence to one individual above all others, without any context. wjematherplease leave a message... 17:46, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
@Wjemather: Dalmia was a prominent president of BCCI. I'm not giving him undue credit, the news article I mentioned is giving that info. And he is part of history that's why added in history section. I think your not reading sourced article. Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 18:21, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
@Rock Stone Gold Castle: You added it to a match fixing sub-section. Randomly mentioning him alone (as if he is the only former president of any significance), and completely out of context, is WP:UNDUE – please read this POLICY. Any mention of him in this article should be in this section, but to do so without policy issues would mean writing at least a few paragraphs to discuss the position of president and the impact/legacy of the most prominent holders of the position. However, this would likely result in an excessively large section that would be better moved into the corresponding list article. wjematherplease leave a message... 23:23, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Affiliated members

@Wjemather:, you should not delete the entire list of Aff. members. Members are vital part of BCCI. I suggest you to reinsert that section. Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 10:03, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

@Rock Stone Gold Castle: See List of members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India; we don't need to duplicate the full list here. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:14, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
@Wjemather: that list missing many asso's names. And it looks lengthy, clumsy. Don't you think you should reinsert that list or merge that 'List article' into this one?Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 10:17, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
@Rock Stone Gold Castle: It makes sense to be split out of this article. The list article simply needs updating/correcting/expanding and tidying up. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:19, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Title sponsor

MasterCard is now T.S. of BCCI, so now all the domestic as well as bilaterals series will place in IND, their title will began with Mastercard. @Wjemather:, will you change or write official name with MasterCard in all the domestic championships's articles.[3] Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 17:34, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

@Rock Stone Gold Castle: We generally use common names for article titles; common names usually don't include sponsors. wjematherplease leave a message... 22:19, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

@Wjemather: but un-update articles have sponsors names. Leauge 1, La Liga have.Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 01:56, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

@Wjemather: I saw that whenever central government in India changes the office bearers of BCCI also got changed and power of BCCI shifts to ruling party. Before 2014 general election most of the big BCCI administrator or even president was from Congress party, NCP (Sharad Pawar). But BJP in power so Jay Shah (son of incumbent home minister of India) became Secretary and news are coming that he'll soon be BCCI president. Current president Sourav Ganguly aslo included towards BJP. Can you reserch further and add this, somewhere in this article. Anathor thing I'm curious how this "Rotation policy" of BCCI works? If possible include it in this article.Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 02:09, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

IPL

@Wjemather:, you did mistake at IPL. The info about IPL FTP window, 2.5 months upcoming window, unofficial ban on Pakistan due to state sponsor terrorism, all it is part of present, then how can you move it to history section? I wrote all it with reliable source. If you think the info about Pakistan is not related here, which I think is related, everyone knows only the terrorist safe haven Pakistan isn't allowed in IPL, how you can remove it? You could move that info to Pakistan India relations article Or atleast this info deserves place there.Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 09:30, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

@Rock Stone Gold Castle: Again, this relates to WP:NPOV policy (WP:UNDUE). Such things bear mention in the main article on the relevant subject (in this case IPL) but not in an article about the BCCI, and having a section on the IPL where over half the content deals with the exclusion of Pakistani players is very unbalanced. There were (unnecessarily) two sections dealing with the IPL so I merged them to the one in the History section as the financials are best covered within other related sub-sections. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:23, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

But @Wjemather:, but IPL got 2.5 months window 1 or 2 months back, so its a current thing, how can you latest developments add in history section? IPL is the most imp thing for BCCI revenue. It should be in Finance or dom champ'ps sect. Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 15:07, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

WP:GAFAIL

There is no need for me to find time over the weekend because this is an immediate fail. The article should not have been nominated without proofreading and copyediting. It seems the nomination was done without consideration of the GA criteria. Please see points 1 and 3 of WP:GAFAIL. Point 1 applies if the article is a long way from meeting any one of the six good article criteria. Point 3 applies if it has cleanup banners that are unquestionably still valid.

WP:GACR#1 is titled "Well written" meaning that the prose must be good, the spelling and grammar must be correct and the article must be readable and understandable. Something that begins with "First time game of cricket was played in India by European sailors" is not well written. Even if that was a mistake, the prose and grammar do not improve as you read on. For example, the sub-section 1945–1960 is something a small child would write better.

The presence of cleanup banners is appropriate because the article needs a lot of work to bring it up to standard. Right at the top of the page is Template:Copy edit which means what it says. A good article does not require copyediting; it has already been copyedited so that it qualifies for review. This article is a long, long way from any kind of acceptable standard. Not only BCCI but also most of the state and regional cricket association are indulge in this phenomenon, in which politicians runs these associations. Politicians tend to use state and regional cricket associations as a ladder to reach at the top in the Indian cricket administration : BCCI. For example, present Indian prime minister Narendra Modi was president of Gujarat Cricket Association for brief period of time form 16 September 2009 to 30 May 2014; union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia (BJP) is a powerful politician in Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA), Since April 2022, his son is vice-president of Gwalior Division Cricket Association, which is part of MPCA.[1][2] After Lodha committee's suggestions or guidelines, which states that no Incumbent minister or MP can held office in BCCI or State association, politicians found an alternate way to bypass it, now politicians tend to place their sons, brothers etc. on the posts and indirectly run the post.[3]

@Rock Stone Gold Castle: this paragraph is about state cricket associations and only peripherally mentions the BCCI. It should be rewritten with more focus on the BCCI; then it can be put back into the article. I agree it's appropriately sourced but it's poorly written and barely readable, and I'm not going to fix it in its current state. Baffle☿gab 09:09, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
I agree, this is not directly relevant to this article about the BCCI. Not least because Politicians tend to use state and regional cricket associations as a ladder to reach at the top in the Indian cricket administration : BCCI. is not in the source, and is therefore WP:OR/WP:SYNTH.
