The MaPulane tribe gives the name Motlatse to the river
The name Blyde River was given in 1840 by the women of voortrekkers, who was waiting for their husband who leaved under the conduct of Hendrik Ptgieter, trying to find a way to Lourenço-Marquès. Because they wasn't already back they taught they were dead so they gave the name "Treur River" (River of tears) to the river bording the camp where they were. They still leaved looking for survivors and it's near another river that they named "Blyde River" (River of joy), that they find them all back, lost but alive.
