Simile/Metaphor

[edit]

Is there ans place in this article to say the term is used as a simile to mean gaudy or over-decorated (something like that)? I for example just said that overlinking on an article made it lit up like Blackpool Illuminations (I knew my audience would understand the allusion.)

I don't know how common this expression is, and doubt it is heard outside the UK. I'm in Cambridgeshire (actually never been to Blackpool). SimonTrew (talk) 15:26, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

David Tennant 2007

[edit]

As I've been the victim of IP bias on some pages (i.e. edits reverted without explanation), I should add my corrections regarding the two Doctor Who-related lightings come from the following sources: Tom Baker accompanied by Sladen and Marter - there is a photo of them doing the lighting on Baker's homepage [1]. The source for Tennant doing the 2007 event solo comes from a documentary included in the Doctor Who Complete Series 4 DVD box set (that and also the fact Billie Piper was no longer a cast member; if he'd been accompanied by anyone it would have been Freema Agyeman or Catherine Tate). 68.146.78.43 (talk) 16:05, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Times

[edit]

What time do the lights remain lit to ? Was down there at 23:45 thursday and they were off (despite the town being still fairly busy) The promenade can be quite congested earlier in the evening so the article should indicate the best time to view ?

Funding

[edit]

The article mentions the funding for the illuminatons coming mainly from Blackpool council but is a bit vauge on other sources such as sponsorship from businesses and donations from visitors. To what extent do these sources fund the lights ? How many businesses actually contribute ?

Misleading statement re: predating patent of lightbulbs

[edit]

The section that reads "The original event preceded Thomas Edison's patent of the electric light bulb by twelve months." seems, to me, to be deliberately misleading. The original event used arc lamps, invented over seventy years previously, not lightbulbs, so the fact it preceeded Edison's patent is total irelevant.

Contradiction over dates

[edit]

The lead sentence states: "they run each year for 66 days, from late August until early November"

However, both the dates that were here for last year's illuminations and the dates I've found for this year contradict this – they cover a four-month period from early September to early January the following year. Is the statement in the lead just out of date, or is the longer period temporary? — Smjg (talk) 17:10, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
