The Significance of Black Nobel Prize laureates
[edit]I reckon someone will soon try to delete the Black Nobel Prize laureates page, again. Please try to understand the importance of such a list.
People of the African Diaspora have faced an unyeilding amount of prejudice with regards to their intellectual capacity. James D. Watson, a Nobel Laureate, made several comments implying the intellectual inferiority of people of African Descent.
Each Black person who has won the Nobel Prize is proof of the intelligence and creativity of Black people. And perhaps, of all people.
If people of color can take pride in the accomplishments of Black people in a List of African-American firsts
If women can take pride in the 35 women who have won a Nobel prize and create the list of female Nobel laureates,
If Princeton Alumni can take pride in the 32 affiliates who have been awarded the Nobel prize, List of Nobel laureates affiliated with Princeton University
If CUNY affiliates can take pride in the 12 individuals who have been awarded the Nobel prize, List of Nobel laureates affiliated with the City University of New York
If the University of California can take pride in the 60+ individuals who have been awarded the Nobel prize, List of Nobel Laureates affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley
I think that people of color should be able to index the accomplishments of their Nobel prize laureates in a PUBLIC encyclopedia that is supposed to be representative of all people.
If you do not understand the significance of racial minorities winning a prize a prestigeous as the Nobel Prize... I would recommend that each person who seeks to destroy this page research White Privilege. Tim Wise is an excellent person to read.
I understand that most of the editors on Wikipedia are white, and nonetheless not of African decent. But I would encourage you to ATTEMPT to see outside of your own world of privelege, and understand the huge accomplishment of Black Laureates accross the world and why it needs to be indexed and RECOGNIZED in a public forum such as this.
Thank you.
See outside of your own prejudice. Take the challenge. - Define "black."
What is the point of this entry?
[edit]The editor above implies that anyone who moves for deletion is laboring under "white privilege" (a virulently anti-white, racist canard of the far-left) while s/he capitalizes "Black" but not "white" (making clear the editor's own prejudices).
Are there any other races that have such lists maintained for them? I do not find this entry to be particularly encyclopedic. VonBeeble (talk) 11:25, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
We need to provide an empirical definition of 'blackness'. If the concept defines anyone who has suffered from 'white privilege' - essentially, anyone who is not white - should not Naguib Mahfouz, Rabindranath Tagore and Kenzaburo Oe also be included? PrivateSponge (talk) 10:32, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- My view is that this article does not belong in Wikipedia. I am not American so I am not across the nuances of the USA people of colour scene but my immediate impression is that the article is non-encylcopedic, rather unhelpful, exists to serve the political agenda of a relatively small group and is counterproductive to the cause anyway. As a non-American it gives me the impression that we should be surprised if a black American achieves a Nobel, I wasn't before but I am a little now. It also gives me great concern that people should be categorised by colour and makes me ponder the impossibility and the inadivisability of determining a person's colour. The suggestion regarding an empirical definition of 'blackness' is highly racist and in most if not all Western countries, illegal; the next step is to issue race ID cards. I would like to see this article go, and quickly. Ex nihil (talk) 00:52, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Article for Deletion

Obama
[edit]"2009 Barack Obama became the first African American President of the United States of America, and the third African-American to win the Nobel Peace Prize"
How many African American Presidents does the United States have? And would this list have been created if Obama had not won? --140.203.12.242 (talk) 20:11, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
What is 'Black'?
[edit]What does black mean? Setting aside the impossible arguments about whether black is about identity, culture or genetics I note that the introductory line now refers to Black Africans. That at least makes some sense in that the list now refers to people whose indigenous roots reside in the African continent and that can be determined empirically, so presumeably a Papuan, Kanaka, Maori or Innuit Nobel Laureate is excluded from the list, but if it restricts issues of colour to Africans should we not move this page to Black African Nobel Prize Laureates? What do you think? Ex nihil (talk) 03:15, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- the word "black", in Wikipedia, means what the average racialist American thinks it means. --Andersmusician NO 06:09, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]{{movereq|List of black Nobel Prize laureates}}
Black Nobel Prize laureates → List of black Nobel Prize laureates — List of Nobel Prize lauretes of black African ancestry. Or alternatively, List of Nobel Laureates of black African ancestry. Per WP:LISTNAME, this article's title should begin "List of...". I think black African descent/ancestry is preferencial to using the ambigous term "black"; an editor above on this talk page says the term is meant to refer to what the "average racialist American thinks it means", but while I'm sure Americans do make a significant proportion of viewers to this site, there are people around the world using the English language Wikipedia who would have very different perspectives on who is or is not "black". Given the points made by other users, I think List of black Nobel Laureates would be fine. The article in that form would satisfy the requirements of WP:LISTNAME, and I I don't think using black is as contentous as I originally stated. --84.92.117.93 (talk) 23:56, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Support. Davshul (talk) 10:07, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- I also support based on the revised proposed name. Davshul (talk) 18:17, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
CommentWeak OpposeSupport I support a move to a new list name but not to either of the proposed names. My vote goes to List of black Nobel Prize laureates. IMO, there is no shortage of list employing a "List of black..." format that I don't see it being an issue. From what I could find only List of Brazilians of Black African descent is the only list that employs "black African descent". Likewise, Portuguese of Black African ancestry, which is just a redirect, appears to be the only list with "black African ancestry" in the title. --Labattblueboy (talk) 01:32, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Changed my mind, I think you're right and there wouldn't be a problem with "List of black Nobel Laureates". Ammended the move request accordingly. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 22:55, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: What is the definition and purpose of "black" in this context? Why not expand the list and make it List of Nobel Laureates of African descent and include all winners descended from persons from the African continent? – ukexpat (talk) 20:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've changed the move request, so hopefully that isn't an issue. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 22:56, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- Comment – There was a better version of this list (images, sortable table) in the history of List of black Nobel Laureates. I've made this page a redirect to that one, and incorporated some of this page's refs there. Therefore, I've commented out the requested move template from this page as well. — ækTalk 07:50, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
