GA Review

[edit]

Article (edit | visual edit | history) · Article talk (edit | history) · Watch

Article seems generally ok but I've got a few issues that need to be addressed before I can pass it as GA.

Lead

[edit]
  • "Most critics complimented..." - I think it might be better to say "Many critics complimented..."
  • "It earned Goldfrapp a nomination for "Best British Dance Act" at the 2004 BRIT Awards, but they lost to Basement Jaxx". - the "lost out to Basement Jaxx" bit seems a bit unnecessary for the lead. I also think it would be better to say "It earned the band a nomination..." to avoid repetition of 'Goldfrapp'. The Brit info should also appear in the main article.
  • "inspirations were disco music group Baccara and techno artist Hakan Lidbo" - again you shouldn't mention things in the leas that aren't discussed in the main body of the article.
  • "and has sold nearly 500,000 copies worldwide" - as of when?

Recording and production

[edit]
  • "but instead decided to take their work in a different direction with more rhythmic music." - no need to say 'instead'
  • "Goldfrapp quickly chose to record in a studio in a Bohemian area of Bath, England because they needed somewhere to put their equipment and start working." - think this sentence should be reworded - "quickly" sounds odd where it is
  • "The band began working on the album in January 2002 with a list of songs they wanted to try to record, such as a disco song with only string instruments." - This should be explained more - Goldfrapp wanted a disco song on the album so they then wrote one? Or did they adapt a song into a disco style?
  • "The studio was dark, and its walls were covered in neon lights, so Alison Goldfrapp used them to write down her song ideas." Again needs rewording - did Alison write on the walls?
  • "Goldfrapp held jam sessions with Mark Linkous and Adrian Utley. After they built momentum writing the album, Goldfrapp decided not to move to another studio." - these two sentences should be merged - first one seems a little stubby.
  • "The album cover is a collage made by Mat Maitland of photographs taken by Polly Borland. It shows Alison Goldfrapp with two wolves, and artwork in the liner notes also has a wolf motif, including women with wolf heads." I think this should be reworded, I'd suggest:

The album cover is a collage made by Mat Maitland of photographs taken by Polly Borland featuring Alison Goldfrapp with two wolves. Artwork in the liner notes also has a wolf motif, including women with wolf heads.

Composition

[edit]

Seems fine.

Critical reception

[edit]
  • The section starts with "Black Cherry received generally positive reviews from music critics." then goes on to include proportionally more bad reviews than good ones. This hurts the flow as well with "Michael Idov's review for Pitchfork Media referred to Goldfrapp as "ambulance chasers"..." seemingly coming out of nowhere. I'd suggest commenting on the reviews rather than just quoting e.g. "However, Michael Idov referred to Goldfrapp as "ambulance chasers" in his review for Pitchfork Media, criticising the band's switch to electro music, and describing Black Cherry as "a soundtrack to excruciatingly banal seduction."

Chart performance and sales

[edit]
  • "The album remained on the chart for twenty-six weeks and had sold 256,703 copies as of August 2005. In August 2005, Black Cherry was certified platinum in the UK." - I'd suggest merging these sentences.

Track listing

[edit]
  • Think "All bonus tracks appear on the Japanese edition of Black Cherry." could be better worded to say "the following track were included on the Japanese edition of Black Cherry." or similar. Same goes for the Dutch ed.

And that's it - let me know when you've addressed my concerns and good work on getting the article this far. Cavie78 (talk) 17:51, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
