Versions

[edit]

What is the most recent version of the software? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.79.177.254 (talk) 15:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article currently mentions which. But as long as BitTorrent has an official site, it's the first place to check. -Lwc (talk) 01:11, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The latest one should be 5.30. And a full history can be find at <https://github.com/kenorb-contrib/BitTorrent>. --Galaxy (talk) 14:09, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please update this tab as as soon as possible using reliable sources. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.39.143.210 (talk) 07:13, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons

[edit]

Some have been denounced by Cohen for various reasons, including improper traffic protocols or bad code.

It'd be nice to expand on that... —Preceding unsigned comment added by OMouse (talkcontribs) 23:23, 27 December 2005

Specs of current versions

[edit]

Does Cohen even publish the specs and details on the "latest versions" anymore... or is his site now just a sales front? Sweetfreek 08:43, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

multiple clients to run simultaneously

[edit]

Is there a client or configuration that allows multiple clients to run simultaneously (each using its own network) to download/upload for one torrent file (making the download faster at the expense of extra bandwidth and connections)? -- Zondor 07:39, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for .torrent files

[edit]

The BitTorrent client enables a user to search for files in the .Torrent (pronounced "dot torrent") format

This is a bit confusing. Doesn't a BitTorrent client handle the .torrent file, not search for it?--Hal Canary 00:01, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The formulation is indeed ab bit confusing. The client can´t search for .torrent files, but it can search for files in the .torrent and only download some of them. For example, if in a .torrent are included two CDs, you can only download one of them. --Gronau 22:29, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some info on the BitTorrent client's search facility that should hopefully make things a bit clearer. Ian Dunster 11:38, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Icon vs. Screenshot

[edit]

Shouldn't we have the same version of bittorrent for both the screenshot and the icon? (Since the icon is now mac and the screenshot is windows.) 67.181.82.100 20:12, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshots

[edit]

Should we keep the screenshots up to date with the version? It would probably make it look better, and we could probably make the previous versions a separate article under history of bittorrent (client) or list of bittorrent (client) versions. The former would probably be better, but I am just throwing this out. Any suggestions? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.82.100 (talkcontribs) 20:22, 25 November 2006

Bittorrent client (made by Bittorrent Inc.) vs BitTorrent client (Bittorrent protocol client sofware: uTorrent, BitComet, KTorrent, etc)

[edit]

A BitTorrent client is a computer program that is used to download and upload files via the BitTorrent protocol.

There are a lot of client software to whom this quote applies, but it seems this article is about a specific product. Am I wrong? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 201.19.212.42 (talk) 21:29, 8 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I agree. Article should be about BitTorrent clients, including the official BitTorrent client

[edit]

I agree. The article should be about BitTorrent clients in general, including the official BitTorrent client. It should elaborate on the ability for any party to implement the protocol and should mention the major torrent clients. It would be appropriate to show the market saturation of all clients. Note the WP page for Azureus links to this page in the context of 'being a BitTorrent client'. Given the current content of this page that's clearly incorrect. - J.Mawson —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.253.57.253 (talk) 19:58, 9 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

It would probably be better if the article was split into two sections, like "bittorrent client" for describing the entire set of clients, and "Bittorrent (client)" for describing the specific client. Darthnader37 00:04, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are already pages about the other clients Trapper 07:12, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But not one specifically about the general group like "bittorrent client" and then the other one is a clarification of the actual Bittorrent client. Darthnader37 00:53, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like a case for a bittorrent clients (plural) page and a bittorrent client (singular page) that refers to the BitTorrent Inc. client Trapper 07:33, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Essentially. "Bittorrent (client)" for Bittorrent INc. client and "bittorrent client" for the group of clients. Anyone want to get a poll in motion, or is this open and shut? Darthnader37 07:54, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. This page should be renamed to BitTorrent (client) and a new page should be created here about BitTorrent clients in general. Ultra-Loser [ T ] [ C ] 08:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. See [[Bittorrent client] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darthnader37 (talkcontribs) 05:47, 28 January 2007

BitTorrent Inc. bought by ...

[edit]

Added the "current" tag, see external link: [1]

BitTorrent, once a pariah for enabling vast unauthorized video file-sharing, plans to
announce today that it has struck distribution deals with eight media partners, including :20th Century Fox, Paramount and MTV Networks.

Flex Flint 06:21, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no warning needed, nobody is editing the page --Kurt Jansson 17:21, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BitTorrent wasn't bought by anybody Trapper 21:25, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mainline

[edit]

The client ID is not actually a human readable string - individual clients decode the ID string ( in the case of official clients the string begins with "M" into a human readable form according to a table created by the developer - calling BitTorrent official releases Mainline is merely a convention adopted by some developers Trapper 07:47, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article Split

[edit]

I have removed the tag, someone can add it back latter if it indeed is in need of a split, until then, it's gone. --Pchov 10:59, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:BitTorrent 5.png

[edit]

Image:BitTorrent 5.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

File:Bittorrent 7.2.1 screen.jpg Nominated for speedy Deletion

[edit]
An image used in this article, File:Bittorrent 7.2.1 screen.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on BitTorrent (software). Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}).

BitTorrent cryptocurrency

[edit]

I just discovered that μTorrent now comes with its own cryptocurrency "BTT". You earn BTT tokens when you upload, and you pay tokens when you download. It seems they intend to add the same functionality to the mainline BitTorrent client. See more about this at the μTorrent talkpage.

--David Göthberg (talk) 23:10, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding was that circa 6.0 bt was a utorrent reskin and both were made by the same group. Was that still the case when the BTT update happened? It seems strange to me that a feature would be added to one noticably sooner than the other if they're still basically the same program. Nyuuposting (talk) 14:30, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

versions

[edit]

version 5.0 installer uses the same workflow as 4.26.0's installer: no EULA and no reference to the bittorrent license. 4.26.0 isn't listed in the article but it falls between versions that are & that are under the BOSL. Plausible that 5.0 (and, potentially other 5.* releases) also BOSL but not sure how to verify or if that is necessary. Nyuuposting (talk) 23:40, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
