College
[edit]Hi all
Scalydonuk - you changed my edit to this article. Having reviewed Wikipedia's policies I can understand the removal of the word 'good' from my line on Bishop's Stortford College as this is perhaps subjective. However, in a very recent official Inspection, the College was rated very highly indeed! Why remove the link to the College's website though? What is wrong with giving a link to the website? An encyclopedia is supposed to be informative...... Unless you can persuade me otherwise, I'll put the link back. Perhaps we should list all of the secondary schools and give links to all of their websites?
Adrian Baker 17:59, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
My problem was that it read "there is a very good independent school" followed by the link directly after. I am perfectly happy with the link being under the links section, but having it straight after an opinionated statement (even if there is proof to back it up) didn't seem very neutral. I would see no problem in saying that the Bishop's Stortford College is the best school in the town, according to ofsted; but I thought dropping it in casually like that made it sound a bit too opinionated. I hope that I have cleared up your concerns. --Sclaydonuk 18:49, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
No problem Sclaydunk, I was indeed wrong to put online a comment that sounded opinionated. It is much better now. Thanks for the reply

Infobox improvements
[edit]Is it just me, or is the information box on the right a bit boring? The majority of replies in the right hand column contain either 'east', 'england' or 'hertfordshire'. I would like to see a wider variety of information that is a bit more interesting.
--Sclaydonuk 13:52, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Richard Whittington
[edit]I added some information about Richard Whittington's links with the town, and also added a bit about Bishop's Stortford Golf club in the leisure part. Carl w 13:34, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
external links
[edit]This is now rammed up by the side of the recently added climate section. I think it would look better below the climate graph so that it again looked like a separate section. Should this be done?
The info box looks fine to me sclaydonuk .... the info is at least correct! Adrian Baker 22:46, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
I agree and have changed it, all be it by a rather crude method. Alternatively the climate graph could be made smaller. --Sclaydonuk 20:14, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
I think that the climate graph is too big. It takes up a large portion of the page but doesn't offer a lot in return. I think it should be made smaller. I'm glad you cleaned up the links. Adrian Baker 21:38, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Resized graph to 200px and aligned it on the right. It doesn't interfere with the external links as much now, and is still clickable for a clearer image. As a Stortfordian myself, I'm very happy with the article. :D AKismet 01:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
The claim that Bishop's Stortford often gets snow is untrue, and the assertion that this is due to 'being near the coast' even more daft. Coastal areas tend to get less snow than inland areas, not more. This section has clearly been written by someone quite young who a) thinks the last couple of harsher winters are typical (they're not), and b) has a poor understanding of physical geography.
BTW When the hell are the 'edit' buttons finally gonna get moved so that they appear in the box of info they actually relate to, not the box below!!!!!! Grrrrrr!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.25.204.76 (talk) 23:14, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Essex?
[edit]Why is there a link to this article from Bishop's Stortford, Essex? Bishop's Stortford is in Hertfordshire. 80.5.208.38 19:51, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- There are points in Stortford where by moving from one's living room to one's bathroom, you would cross the border from Hertfordshire into Essex. AKismet 11:17, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Aye, that's canny like, but does anyone really think that Bishop's Stortford is in Essex? I mean, apart from those people living in the three houses by the Stansted Road roundabout. Carl w 23:44, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oi, I know one of them :P AKismet 23:58, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

- To actually answer this question (for those still curious), it's a frequent error made (I've received letters marked Essex), and many computer systems tend to automatically lump border cases in one or the other - especially if being handled by people in the glamorous profession of data entry. I believe I've also had at least one letter indicating that Bishop's Stortford is IN Harlow. 139.222.237.59 02:03, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- There is no point of Bishop's Stortford in Essex - the traffic signs suggest that there is 3 houses in essex in Bishop's stortford but the signs are just in the place that motorists can see them best. I know for a fact that those 3 houses have 'East Herts' council bins and not 'Uttlesford'! paddySC 18:51, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- I live in Bishop's Stortford, and it is NOT in Essex. Stansted Airport is in Essex, so is the Stansted/M11 roundabout. Bishop's Stortford is on the border and edge of Hertfordshire, and is surrounding by Essex on most sides. I think I would know about, only lived here for 17 years.... calvin999 (talk) 00:02, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

- What beats me is, how Stanstead Airport can be regarded as a 'London' airport, when it's 40 miles away from London. It's nearly as daft as Reus Airport being called a Barcelona Airport, when it's over 70 miles away! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.239.71.235 (talk) 19:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Simple English
[edit]I have created a simple english article on Bishop's Stortford and am just informing you so that any of the regualr Stortford editers can contribute to this. If you do not know, simple english uses a very small vocabulary and the wikipedia is designed for people who don't speak english as their first language or who have learning difficulties. --Sclaydonuk 09:17, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
External Links
[edit]I think that there are far too many internet links at the bottom of the page, and a great number of them serve as advertising for various organisations. In my opinion the number should be halved. My recommendations for removal are:
- Both on Cluzion Music Club (advertises the club rather than expands on article)
- 'Detailed History' (the link titled brief history is more detailed and relevant than this)
- Swimming Club (not necessary)
- Cantate Youth Choir (only indirectly associated with BS)
- 'Largest Residents Association' the recently added civic association link covers this.

250,000 year ago??
[edit]Hi Guys,
"Settlers first made their homes in Bishop's Stortford over 250,000 years ago,"
I'm going to take this out because humans had yet to leave Africa, and were not even humans at this point (sorry creationists) and were probably homo habilis or erectus.... Could it be 2,500? It's not referenced though, so perhaps someone could provide that if they want to change it to the new period? --GeologyTom 14:17, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Reference to Boar's Head
[edit]Is the slightly opinionated statement about the Boar's Head pub really appropriate for Wikipedia? There are godknowshowmany pubs in this town, and I don't think any of my friends living locally would think that the Boar's Head is the most notable. We could list/link a few of the pubs in the town if we wanted, or we could simply make a statement such as "many public houses, between them catering for a very wide audience" (or something that doesn't sound so sucky).
Listing the Boar's Head like that makes it seem like it's the only pub that is always jam-packed/has a reputation, when the first pubs most people talk about (albiet not in a good light) are The Star and The Black Lion (for example) - anonymous occassional Wikipedia user from Bishop's Stortford — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.9.157.122 (talk) 20:33, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Pub advert
[edit]The pubs section reads like an advert for The Star. It'd be nice to see a more varied and balanced description of Stortford's pubs. Pstevenson (talk) 19:58, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
Population is Over 10 Years Out of Date
[edit]Just sayin'. Where's the best source for up to date population data? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.15.128.65 (talk) 2:45 pm, Today (UTC+1)
- Not out of date as last published count is the 2001 census all others since are estimates until 2011 census data publishedTmol42 (talk) 19:45, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
- Census 2011 gives 37838 (using http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/ and summing the wards) Geofpick (talk) 22:32, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
Bishop, Bishops, Bishop's?
[edit]Most sites associated with the town, and the Post Office, agree on Bishop's. But I've seen both Bishop (in the 1911 Britannica[1]) and Bishops (on several apparently-authoritative maps and a road sign [2]).
Can someone with some actual knowledge address the history and possible contemporary confusion over the spelling? David Brooks (talk) 19:24, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
As a resident, everybody in the town uses Bishop's. Most likely, Bishops is the result of badly designed computer systems that won't accept the apostrophe. Cyberjacob (talk) 08:40, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
And following the 2014 refurb, the railway station has the apostrophe.Geofpick (talk) 22:29, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
The town (or certainly some part or version of it) was historically 'owned' by the Bishop of London. It was therefore the Ford over the river Stort owned by the Bishop, hence the possessive apostrophe. I have never seen 'Bishop' used in the singular, although in a local accent the 's' might be hard to distinguish when said quickly, making it sound singular. I certainly see the apostrophe dropped often, and I tend to drop it too given the way it can confuse computers but the correct spelling (and what you see on 'official' things) includes the possessive apostrophe Seeinggreen (talk) 01:18, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
