Which species?

[edit]

The bing cherry is a cultivar of which species of cherry? Avium? Cerasus? Caeruleancentaur (talk) 14:33, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of Crossbred graft?

[edit]

This needs correcting. There is no such thing as a 'crossbred graft'. I suspect that the Bing cherry was a selection from seedlings, but I haven't researched this so I don't want to change the text of the article. 'Crossbred' means to hybridize two different species of perhaps cultivars, which either intentionally, or just be taking seeds from some cherries, was probably what was done here. A 'graft' is a way of propagating a particlular cultivar by attaching it to the roots of a (usually, in this case) seedling tree. It has nothing to do with breeding and does not produce a new variety. If there is no source for how the Bing cherry originated, perhaps the word 'produced' would be general enough to use here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.201.167.160 (talk) 23:18, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
