Should Crystal be described as an "actor, singer, writer, producer, director, comedian, and television host" or "entertainer"?

  • To me, "actor, singer, writer, producer, director, comedian, and television host" seems long-winded, and "entertainer" feels more appropriate as it could be elaborated upon further on in the article. 79.97.226.247 (talk) 22:18, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer. The lead ought to be a summary. Does the article even go into his work as a singer? Only passing reference to some of these others. I would change it to read "entertainer." Cool Hand Luke 21:54, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer but it should then be qualified after that; ie "Billy Crystal is an American entertainer who has worked as an actor, writer, comedian and director." He has hosted television events, but it's not his occupation; neither is singer. It's sufficient to state later that he is also been a producer/EP on certain projects. МандичкаYO 😜 01:16, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer this is more concise and to the point and can be expanded upon/explained in the article itself. Fraulein451 (talk) 16:23, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer Something like:

"Billy Crystal is an American entertainer. Amongst his accomplishments, he has worked as an actor, writer, comedian and director."

--Kevjonesin (talk) 06:54, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer is the best way to condense the words actor, singer, writer, producer, etc. His roles can be further discussed in the body of the article, therefore I think entertainer is sufficient for the lead. Cheers, Comatmebro ~Come at me~ 23:09, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Summoned by bot. The more long-winded version seems a bit overboard but "entertainer" makes him sound like a guy who plays the harmonica or something. While it sounds a bit much I would go with the longer version as it is accurate. Coretheapple (talk) 20:09, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I'm with Core on this one. The complete litany in the manner it is written in this RfC inquiry is awkward, but entertainer seems insufficient in detail. My feeling is that the dichotomy being presented here is limiting the number of options that might be explored; it's hardly either-or with these options. I'd suggest describing him as "an entertainer known primarily for his role in comedies, having been an actor, writer, director, ect...in film, television, ect." Or something to that effect. Snow let's rap 04:54, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Long-winded as suggested by Core, Snow and Мандичка. Leave out the host from that line, his Academy award hosting should be a separate sentence.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 10:53, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Entertainer. As per Cool Hand Luke, the lead ought to be a summary. Flat Out talk to me 06:34, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

*Technically every actor, singer or comedian are considered entertainers. Just putting entertainer doesn't really make much sense. It should list his actual occupations. Cosmo Miyazaki (talk) 19:10, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actor and television host only; they're the most prominent positions of his career when compared to the others, and what he's really noted for. "Entertainer" is simply too vague of a description for the reason given in Cosmo Miyazaki's comment. Snuggums (talk / edits) 18:46, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

**Actor and television host is okay. But would do you think about maybe adding comedian and filmmaker. Those two seem perfect as well. Cosmo Miyazaki (talk) 05:15, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • "X is an entertainer" as an opening sentence is overly bare, but exhaustive lists (which the block-evader keeps adding to the first sentences of articles) are confusing and unhelpful. The opening paragraph of Seth MacFarlane offers a better example of how to describe someone who wears lots of hats: a brief sentence that tells the reader what field of human endeavor the subject works in, followed by highlights of what they're known for doing. -Jason A.
