Not the best biography the guy could have

[edit]

Frankly, the page assumes you know who he is and are looking for trivia. Could someone who does know who he is please help by, for instance, explaining what field he's in? All the jargon in the world is so much gibberish to someone who doesn't know the relevant field... 86.11.124.189 15:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good point, will do. Rklawton 16:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3-ring patent

[edit]

He subsequently declined to patent this invention so that all skydivers could benefit.

AFAIK this is just plain wrong. US patent no. 4337913 regarding the 3-ring release is issued to Booth. The patent expired in the year 2000 or so, and before that all US manufacturers paid Booth $1/ring for all 3-ring risers they made. I don't have have a quote for that, so I'm not adding it to the article, but the statement above should be removed. Skydiver 19:07, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. If someone wants to re-add it, please provide a source for the information. Skydiver 16:54, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I talked with Bill about it a few years ago, but my memory (as well as my face) is a bit fuzzy. Unless/until we can find a source one way or the other, I think we should leave your edit the way it is.Rklawton 21:11, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He is a recipient of the Order of Lenin

[edit]

This is a very dubious assertion. Order of Lenin was the highest civilian decoration by the Soviet Union. The probability of giving this award to a foreign citizen for participating in some expeditions is lowly.

I searched sources for this information, and find just one old video on facebook. Video says that Bill Booth was awarded the order of Lenin, but on screen ordinary pochesna gramota (one of kind of Gramota [uk]) shown. In english, i don't known exact equivalent of this award type. It's typicaly for Soviet Union or post soviet counties simpliest award. This is just a piece of paper with text and some symbols. Gramotas produces many peoples and organization, even schoolchild can get gramota from their school. In USSR tradition on many types of gramotas, portret of Lenin depicted, but it meant nothing. I think statement about order of Lenin, should be removed as mystification. --Шабля (talk) 09:56, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
