Origin
[edit]- Vikings who invaded Gascony in 840 settled in Biarritz which was a good whaling place. Biarritz is not a bask name. Bjarnihus (the house of Bjarni) became Biarnitz and then Biarritz. Scandinavians settled in the area above the beach which name "gardague" is also nordic. After the defeat of their chief in 982, the descendants remained here and went on hunting whale. They were called "Agots" (the Goths) and were not allowed to mix with the others. The segregation aiming these communities (there were many in Gascony and Navarra) finally disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century...
This seems controversial. It needs attribution. --Error 02:08, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
external link to photos of Biarritz
[edit]My website specialises in accurate, information-rich photos of obscure and remote places. It is widely used by travellers and students, and it also serves as an entry point for professional picture researchers, who can register and arrange to release copyright. The images are all copyright protected, so they can't be included directly on a Wikipedia page.
I noticed somebody had put a link from Wikipedia's Port Harcourt page to my own page on Port Harcourt. There there are insufficient photos available worldwide of Port Harcourt, and I thought this link was helpful.
So I've now put an external link to the Biarritz page on my website at the foot of the Wikipedia Biarritz page page, as there is a general lack of photos of Biarritz on the web, although I don't know why.
Is this link useful?

etymology
[edit]- Biarritz appears as Bearids and Bearriz in 1150, Beiarridz in 1165, Bearriz and Beariz in 1170, Bearidz (1186), Bearriz and Beariz (12th century), lo port de Beiarriz and Bearridz in 1261, (cartulaire de Bayonne). Other forms include Beiarid (1199), Bearritz (1249), Beiarriz and Beiarrids (1261), Bearridz (1281), Bearrits (1338), (rôles gascons), Bearritz (1498, chapitre de Bayonne38), Sanctus Martinus de Biarriz (1689, collations du diocèse de Bayonne39), mearritcen (1712), Biarrits (1863, dictionnaire topographique Béarn-Pays basque) et Biarritze et Miarritze au XIXe siècleNote 10.
That "Note 10" at the end makes me suspect a sloppy paste from elsewhere, possible copyright violation. That aside, I'm tempted to cut the paragraph anyway; a complete list of minor spelling variations doesn't really enlighten the reader. —Tamfang (talk) 01:11, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
