The origin of the name "Bhob"

[edit]

Is that a real name / his birth name? Seems like perhaps a fannish play on words, as with ghod for God. Equinox 21:19, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There was an era of fandom when inserting an 'h' after an initial consonant was a thing, from 'bheer' to the fannish pseudo-deity 'Ghu' ("addition of an H after the initial letter of a word came to mean, or at least imply, "pertaining to fandom", as in Lhiterature and Bheer" - Fancyclopedia II). Since fandom was oversupplied with Bobs already, from Bob Tucker to Bob Silverberg to Bob Vardeman (known respectively as Tuckerbob, Silverbob and Vardebob), I suspect that Stewart decided to claim the 'Bhob' title around 1958 in part to distinguish himself all of them, as well as from California fan Bob "Boob" Stewart (the latter so called because he published a fanzine called Boo). --Orange Mike | Talk 05:58, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A nice eulogy. Some corrections…

Bhob added the H to his name very early on because, when he was active in sf fandom, there was another Bob Stewart in fandom. To distinguish between each other, the other Bob Stewart called himself Boob Stewart, and Bhob added the fannish H (as seen in words like bheer and Ghod). For awhile he used it only in fandom. I’m certain this occurred well before he moved to New York. He was aware that it sounded like an affectation and put it into universal use over a period of time. It wasn’t because he “figured he might get a byline.” ...

Your timeline is also off on Castle of Frankenstein, which was a direct imitation of Famous Monsters Of Filmland. The first issue of Famous Monsters was published in February 1958. By 1961 it was so popular that there had been several imitations. The first issue of Castle of Frankenstein was dated February 1962. Bhob was not editor until the fourth issue, dated May 1964. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A601:AE1B:DD00:95CC:2D43:5A5A:CB9A (talk) 01:10, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
