My name is Bettina. I was born in Switzerland in 1956 to two Americans. My father was in the United States Army and was stationed there. My mother had only one sibling and her name was Bettye. One of my father's sisters name was Betty. My mother's favorite Aunt was named Tina. My mother simply put Betty(e) and Tina together and came up with my name. My mother thought it was beautiful and unique! When my mother told the Swiss nurse my name she told my mother it was a very common Swiss name.I have always been very proud of my name and agree with my mother.

I'd like to say someting about the name Bettina:

This name is also used ALL OVER THE WOLRD... and it's not truly a form of italian name Elizabeth that's why not truly an Italian name. Some people says it's a Greek name, some people says it's Italian or Latin, some people say it's Herbew and I hear sometimes it's English... Well most of the names are came from Latin or Hebrew names, so it's not truly Italian preferably it's Hebrew... but noone really knows how a name came from... :) The meaning of this name is: God's promise, I know it because Bettina is my name too. :P

My name is also Bettina. I was named after my mother Elizabeth which means consecrated to God, dedicated to God, oath to God or sacrificed to God. Elizabeth is assuredly Hebrew. This version of the name Bettina is the diminutive of Elizabeth or Elisabeth and is of German origin. There is another form of Bettina which is Italian. It is the diminutive of Benedetta. Benedetta is the feminine form of Benedict which means blessed. There are 6 variants for the name Bettina: Battina, Betiana, Betina, Bettine, Ina and Tina. However, the common nicknames for Elizabeth and Benedetta such as Betty, Betta and Beth are also used for Bettina.

(addendum) One last thing, if your name means consecrated to God, your name is not Italian. If you were named after someone called Elizabeth, your name is not Italian. The etymology of that particular diminutive is German. Over the years there may have been some cross-over, but I have never been able to find RELIABLE sourcing that supports what this Wikipedia page is stating. There are some sources that indicate Bettina as having English origin. However, this is mainly due to false attribution, since Elizabeth is the English form of the Hebrew name Elisheba or Elisheva. The fact that one can find the name Elizabeth in the English form in most European cultures, leads some sources to mistakenly attribute the etymology of Bettina to English (and other cultures as well). And since Elizabeth is so common within Europe, many sources assume that the Latin/Italian version of Bettina is also a diminutive of Elizabeth, when in fact, it is not. It comes from Benedetta (I-Benedetto/L-Benedictus/E-Benedict).

Anyway, I hope this helps. It's always good to do your own research, but know what you are looking for. Don't assume that an English version is the correct one.
