History

[edit]

There are many, many pages with versions of the flag's history. However, most of them are selling flags, and would not be appropriate as links for a variety of reasons.

When it was made

[edit]

I don't have a source, but this is what I read about the flag years ago: It's machine made material, that could not have been made before about 1820. I'm pretty sure that War of 1812 was ruled out due to the material. It was most likely made for a 50th anniversary celebration, either for July 4, 1826 or August 16, 1827. In 1876 it was trotted out for the centennial and falsely believed to date to 1777.

There was a flag at the battle in 1777 that had seven white stripes and 6 red, and the 1826 was made to imitate that. I don't know if we know what arrangement the stars were in. It is highly unlikely that "76" appeared on that 1777 flag, in fact the "76" is a clear sign that it was made for an anniversary.  Randall Bart   Talk  22:12, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FOTW says there is no record at all of a stars and stripes flag at the battle.  Randall Bart   Talk  22:16, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
