Use Benka, Pulko, or Carr after first reference?

[edit]

(question by Pocestnik (talk · contribs) quoted from my talk page)

I see you changed the references to Benka Pulko from Benka, back to Pulko. I have a question in regard to Wiki policy on this. According to the policy link you sent, as I read it, the legal surname should be used. This would mean her name should be changed to Carr, not Pulko. But this would make absolutely no sense, as she does not use Carr professionally. Any suggestion? Thanks. --Pocestnik (talk) 09:53, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you might have stumped me here. Generally the principle is to follow the name that a person is mostly known by. For example, the article Mark Twain refers to him by his legal last name, Clemens, duing his childhood and early career. Later, when he is well known as "Mark Twain", the article refers to him as Twain.
Benka Pulko is known by her maiden name, and does not use Carr professionally, such as here [23]. The English press seems to use Pulko, for example in:
  • Mabrito, Bruce (May 27, 1999), "For vintage racers, it's the look as well as the hot competition", San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio, Texas, p. 10C
But then this rasise the question: if she wants to be called Benka, should WP follow that? I would say, only if the rest of the media follows that. Madonna (entertainer) is called Madonna because she was successful in getting everyone else to use that name.
So I would say use Pulko unless you can show that the majority of media reports about her call her Benka. This is covered most in detail at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). Possibly posting a question at that talk page will get a better answer than mine.
If you feel the Slovenian press mostly recognizes her by her first name, then I won't object to changing it back to Benka. If you do that, I'd explain it specifically because otherwise somebody else will come along and change it back to Pulko again. --Dbratland (talk) 16:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
