Focus

[edit]

This should focus on the hockey instead of Baseball since the NHL did invent, innovate and have the most bench clearing brawls. Now leagues like the LNAH have them like 8 times a year.

I disagree. Baseball brawls deserve their own article. Perhaps NHL fights should as well.

NHL invented this brand fighting? In 1917? Ohhh-kay....--Satyricrash 02:38, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You obviously never wayched hockey in the 70's/80's to know what a real bench brawl is. Basebrawls don't even have fighting anymore.

The concept of a bench-clearing brawl is not exactly unique to either sport. People get pissed off by something in the course of play and rush to their teammates' aid. The fact of the matter is, baseball is the only sport where you really see them anymore: that ten-game suspension the NHL and its affiliates hand out for leaving the bench really makes hockey players think twice about going all Broad Street Bullies on another team. When the article is expanded, the subject should probably be looked at a bit more neutrally, without an accent on any particular sport. Doogie2K (talk) 18:22, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin in England?

[edit]

Can you really claim that the brawl cited in the March 1658 issue of the London Gazette is the original bench clearing brawl? That seems like an entirely unverifiable claim. Surely there must have been large scale fights between teams in other organized sports before then that were not recorded. MarcusMaximus 01:26, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Factual dispute

[edit]

I inserted factual accuracy dispute into origins section. London Gazette was first published in 1665 and according to London Gazette article: It is not a conventional newspaper offering general news coverage, and does not have a large circulation. This seems to be elaborate prank. Przepla (talk) 11:42, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the section, based on this talk page section, and the one above. Dreaded Walrus t c 20:43, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
