GAN on hold

[edit]

I have reviewed this article according to the requirements of the GA criteria and have placed the article on hold until the following issues are addressed. As you address each issue, state how you addressed it (if necessary). If you disagree with a particular issue, state your rationale for doing so after the issue in question so a compromise can be reached.

  1. "...was Principal Medical Officer at Melville Naval Hospital from 1892..." From 1892 to his retirement?
  2. No images exist of Ninnis anywhere?
  3. There are various terms throughout the article that would benefit from wikilinking that may not be commonly known by the average reader (especially within some of the quotes). Give it a go-over and add where necessary.
  4. "...including the Advertiser, the Western Argus and the Sydney Morning Herald..." Include "the" within the link for The Advertiser and The Sydney Morning Herald.
  5. Are there any other relevant external links that could be included?

Altogether, this article is very well-written and abundant in sourcing. The above issues are very minor, but if you have any questions on them, please let me know. I have left the article on hold for seven days for the issues to be addressed. If they are fixed in this time, I will pass the article. If not, the article may be failed and can be renominated at WP:GAN. If necessary to address the above issues, and progress is being made, an extension may be provided. If you have any questions or when you are done, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 17:42, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing the article. 1. is done. 2. I'd love an image of Ninnis, but have been unable to find any (free or non-free). I think part of the problem is that although he was active in many areas he was outstanding in none of them, so his image doesn't really seem to have been recorded. I'll keep looking, however. 3. I've given the article a go-over (often simply reversing my earlier policy of not doubling links in the body from the lead), but I'm wary of using links where they're not absolutely necessary in quotes; the MOS says, after all, that linking in quotes "may clutter the quotation, violate the principle of leaving quotations unchanged, and mislead or confuse the reader." 4. Done. 5. None that really concern Ninnis and aren't used in the sources. I suppose the biographies from BMJ could be included there, but as they are extensively used in the text it's probably redundant. So, I think I've addressed everything. GA passed

[edit]

Good job with addressing the above issues. I figured you had likely exhausted sources to find an image, but keep looking as something may turn up. The use of the other free images help make up for it. The wikilinking was helpful, I don't think the average reader was aware what "strychnine" is, and you did well enough in the linking to avoid any bias in the quotes while still helping any potential confused readers. Personally, I think there should be a link in the lead and the article as readers may skip the lead when going through the article, but if you take this on to FA whenever, I'm sure the duplicate linking will be frowned upon. Anyway, I believe the article meets the GA criteria and have passed the article. Continue to maintain the article to ensure it upholds its GA status.

Also, to anyone that is reading this review, please consider reviewing an article or two at WP:GAN to help with the very large backlog. Instructions can be found here. Each new reviewer that helps to review articles will help to reduce the time that articles wait to be reviewed. If you are new to reviewing and want to familiarize yourself with the process, study the GA criteria, look at other editors' reviews, and leave any questions you have at Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations if you need feedback while performing a review.

Keep up the good work, and I encourage you to continue to bring articles up to good article status. If anyone disagrees with this review, an alternate opinion can be sought at Good article reassessment. If you have any further questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:42, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I normally repeat links from the lead in the body (including in the FAs I've contributed to, and I've never had any problems), but for some reason I chose a different strategy this time. When I find time, I'll certainly do some reviewing at GAN. Apterygial talk 03:10, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
