Inaccuracies and confusing information

[edit]

For the first time I see a featured article with clear talk page. Needs to be fixed:

  • According to its website [1] BRSM is successor of Leninist Communist Youth League of Belorussian SSR, a republican branch of Komsomol, not of the whole Komsomol as currently stated in the article.
  • The article states:"The photo also shows that the group was awarded two Soviet orders for their work". This seems very strange, provided that "BRSM was created on September 6, 2002". In fact those two orders are Order of Lenin awarded to Leninist Communist Youth League of Belorussian SSR in 1970 and Order of the Red Banner awarded to it in 1945, and BRSM bears them as the successor [2]
  • It should be noted in the article, that congress count also includes all Leninist Communist Youth League of Belorussian SSR congresses, hence such a large number 39.

Duly noted, making changes. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 02:43, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If it was added it has been deleted again, thus making the picture of the Komsomol pin redundant. Perhaps someone should reinstate the part of the article which links the current organisation with both "Lukamol" and previous Soviet organisations. Article lead

[edit]

I'm concerned about the quote in the article lead that the BRYU is "accused of using methods of coercion and empty promises to recruit members and that the organization is being used as a propaganda tool". In the criticism section, this particular statement is scarcely sourced. While it may be true that these sorts of accusations are made, without substantial sources to back them up I don't think it's appropriate to include this so prominently in the lead section of the article. Am I missing some of the sources here? Cheers, ➪HiDrNick! 08:27, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See citation 14. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 18:34, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That link is broken for me. ➪HiDrNick! 19:04, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Hmm...if the links are going to be broken, then is there a possibility another Featured Article could be shown on the 9th instead of this? I need time to fix the problems, but I have finals and stuff to take care of. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 20:51, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Symbols

[edit]

Maybe an image of the BRSM symbols could be included. – Ilse@ 12:53, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I included an image from Wikimedia Commons of the scarf worn by members of BRSM. – Ilse@ 14:05, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had the symbols on the article before, but I believe when I re-arranged the article earlier, I think I got rid of it due to the photo that was in the lead. The official symbol is at Image:BRSM recommendation.jpg. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 19:01, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

The following discussion is copied from the to-do list, per Wikipedia:To-do list#What a to-do list is not. – Ilse@ 13:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a featured article about an organization should contain a clear image of the organization's logo. – Ilse@ 13:26, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some questions

[edit]

I have some questions concerning Cyrillic alphabets used in the article:

  • Does the organization use both its Belarusian and its Russian name?
The website of the organization is only in Russian. --Soman (talk) 11:09, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is the Russian name intentionally not written in capitals? If not, I believe capitals should be used here.
  • What language are the Cyrillic words in the section 'Membership and structure'? Are these words (in the original language) particularly informative for the readers' understanding? If so, I believe they should be labelled with the language and transliterated. If not, I believe they should be removed.
  • In the section 'Symbols' the word "Russian" is used twice. Wouldn't it be more correct if the phrase "Cyrillic letters" (wikilinking to Cyrillic Alwas used here instead, since they could be both Belarusian and Russian?

I have a few other questions:

  • Shouldn't the name of the first secretary / leader / secretary general be included in the section 'Membership and structure'? Is this M. Orda ('Activities' section) or Leonid Kovalev (infobox)?
  • A picture of a scarf is used. Shouldn't this scarf be mentioned in the text of the article somewhere?

Thanks, Ilse@ 10:32, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kovalev succeded Orda, see http://www.tvr.by/eng/news.asp?id=18383&date=01.08.2006%2019:29:00. --Soman (talk) 11:22, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe all previous questions have been answered, or the problems have been taken away. I have one more question. In the text it says: "For Belarus!" (Belarusian: За Беларусь!). Is this phrase Belarusian and not Russian? – Ilse@ 10:58, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with criticism

[edit]

The criticism section is based on a document about the Belarusian Patriotic Union of Youth (BPSM) and both the document and the section refer to dates before the foundation of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union. If possible, I think this needs to be clarified in the article; and this is not possible, the paragraphs should be removed. – Ilse@ 23:49, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clarified. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:26, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is no more problem now, thanks. – Ilse@ 10:50, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Featured article review

[edit]

This article is one of the oldest FA promotions yet to have a featured article review. There is an update tag on one section, and when I tried to address it I couldn't verify the article content. The dead links and age of the material also indicate that the article needs updating on a broader scale. The latest information in the article is from 2006, which is almost ten years ago. Inaccurate reference

[edit]

I am the author of the article listed in reference no. 3, "Belarusian Civil Society: Between Repression and Dialogue". While I mention the Belarusian Patriotic Youth Union in that article, I don't mention the Belarusian Republican Youth Union, which didn't exist at the time (2001), much less the apparent fact that it has 6803 branches. My article is again given as a reference for the statement that BRYU (referred to as BRSM in this Wikipedia article) has 120,000 members despite the Institute of War and Peace Reporting being mentioned as the source for this information. Unfortunately, my article has not been available online for years, which makes me wonder where the person who put it as a reference here found it, or at least where he/she saw it listed. Clearly that person didn't actually read the article. (I have it in hard copy in the issue of SEAL in which it appeared.) Nyegosh Dube Sendube (talk) 21:52, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
