Name

[edit]
"Baylander" on the stern of the ship

Not clear whether Baylander was an official USN name. It makes sense but is not mentioned by IVR or NavSource, indeed IVR has "NO NAME (IX 514)" Could it be just a post-USN name? I think that this would affect the correct name for the article. Davidships (talk) 01:56, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Baylander is stenciled onto the fantail at the time it was in service. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 03:36, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this was a bit confusing to me as well, but given the name is actually on the ship, I see no reason to over-think it. Huntster (t @ c) 08:32, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, looks good. And I can see it on the bridge-board in the article pic. Davidships (talk) 17:42, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for creating this page, I am Port Captain on Baylander. I have some edits but am not fluent with Wiki. Baylander is a Skilak class lighter, of which the US Navy purchased 16 of these. It was based on a existing design that was used to make the Alaskan Pipeline. Skilak is a lake in Alaska https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Skilak_Lake. It was never named Skilak. I think the Navy used the name Baylander because it was in Pensacola Bay and it was easyier to say on the radio as a "call sign", but I am not positive. In between being in the BBP and Harlem Baylander was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for 6 months housing Duke Riley's Fly by Night http://creativetime.org/projects/flybynight/ Thanks for your hard work Scott Koen scottkoen@aol.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.53.213.29 (talk) 18:48, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To return to the Skilak name issue, I've removed any mention of it from the article, as Skilak was YFU-71. See https://books.google.com/books?id=chlIAQAAIAAJ&pg=RA22-PA24.

Smallest Aircraft Carrier

[edit]

In Vietnam war many ATC(H) were used as river based heli carriers. The pic is just an example. So the statement about Baylander being this should be discussed.JuergenKlueser (talk) 19:36, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
