Victoria Cross

[edit]

Of the seven members of the AIF to receive the V.C. at the Battle of Lone Pine, the list on this site currently omits W. J. Symons of 7th Battalion AIF. --Trithemius 10:04, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:LateOttomanFlag.png

[edit]

Image:LateOttomanFlag.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Memorial

[edit]

Added reference to the fact that the Lone Pine memorial also stands within the grounds of the Lone Pine cemetery (the two are often confused), and adjusted instances of full-capitalisation of 'Anzac' to proper nouns where appropriate, as per discussion on 'Anzac Day' page. --Hayaman 11:48, 1 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hayaman (talkcontribs)

Australia?

[edit]

Wasn't Australia still part of the British Empire? So shouldn't the Infobox state British Empire and underneath that Australia? I have corrected the opening para which made it sound like only the Australians fought at Gallipoli. Mztourist (talk) 11:04, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, yes Australia was part of the British Empire at the time; however, to my knowledge only Australian troops took part in the Battle of Lone Pine between 6 and 10 August 1915. That said, I'm not fussed either way, if you feel it is necessary to add the British Empire to the infobox, I can live with it. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 11:10, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Its true that only Australian troops took part in the battle, but I'm not sure if Infobox protocol means that only Australia should be listed Mztourist (talk) 11:15, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Terrain

[edit]

Nice article. It's too bad that the map in the "Terrain" section identifies only one or two of the many named features in the section. As a reader, it's a bit frustrating: what is the map for? I assume most or all of the lines are ridges, and the shaded areas are plateaus or cups. Or are the lines trenches? Even if it is hard to get the map image refine, an expanded caption could really help. Perhaps to say that the "pimple" is the northern or southern one of two curves on the east side of 400 plateau, say, if that were true. Or that the 4 lines descending / running south from the 400 feature are 4 roads or trenches or ridge lines named a, b, c, and d. Some attempt to suggest where one or two of the features named in the text would give some purpose to the display of the map. Again, nice work, I am sure it is not easy. Thanks --doncram 03:58, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, Doncram, I've tried to add something to the caption. Not sure if this helps or not. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 10:13, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicting end dates?

[edit]

Sources have different dates saying when the battle ended, either 9 Aug or 10 Aug (Wikipedia says tenth) is this because of time zones?

I've compiled some sites that have the dates (trying to get .gov)

9 Aug

https://www.awmlondon.gov.au/battles/lone-pine

https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/E84292

https://www.dva.gov.au/newsroom/media-centre/media-backgrounders/first-world-war-battle-lone-pine-1915

10 Aug

https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au/wars-and-missions/ww1/where-australians-served/gallipoli/august-offensive/lone-pine

Even dva.gov.au has conflicting information

I didn't spend too much time looking for links so if you've found more add them Banaanae (talk) 12:16, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
