I'll read through and review properly later. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:56, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well-written:

(a) the prose is clear and concise, respects copyright laws, and the spelling and grammar are correct;

  • Various proposals for making the English flow more naturally:
  • The Background section probably needs an initial sentence explaining who was fighting with who for control of what.
  • "was a naval engagement of the Ottoman-Habsburg struggle for the control of the Mediterranean." > "struggle in the Ottomon-Habsburg..."
  • "Bey" - worth linking
  • " the widespread banditry of the island" - "on the island"
  • "the Spanish squadron of Sicily had no galley capable of sailing, and the fear among the population of an Ottoman attack was great" > "the Spanish squadron of Sicily had no seaworthy galleys, and the population feared an Ottoman attack."?
  • " each one with 100 musketeers, 50 spontoons, 20 bucklers and 150 chuzos " - I think this should "100 muskets" (a musketeer is a soldier who used it). I wasn't sure what a chuzo was, and it wasn't linked.
  • "in case of it was necessary to free the rowers to help the galley's soldiers to fight the Ottomans" > "in case it was necessary to arm the rowers to assist the galleys's soldiers to fight the Ottomans."?
  • "160 musketeers " - worth checking if this was muskets, or musketeers.
  • "According to the Viceroy's informers," - I'd recommend "spies" versus "informers" in this context
  • "South of Samos, the Spanish Admiral was informed by Greek fishermen of the presence of 10 Ottoman galleys under Sinari Pasha in those waters." I'd recommend "in the surrounding area" instead of "in those waters".
  • "where the Ottoman fleet was anchored: two galleys in vanguard, two disposed to the battle, and three in rear-guard" I'd recommend "...anchored: it was positioned with two galleys in the vanguard, two forming the main battle group, and three in the rear-guard".
  • "After three hours of combat, Sinari Pasha surrendered his galley, being imitated by his vice-flagship and five other galleys." - "his galley, and was followed by his second-in-command and five other galleys."
  • " Among the most signaled prisoners were Sinari Pasha" - "Among the most prominent prisoners"?
  • "who died of sadness shortly after," - I don't think "sadness" is quite the right word. "who died of sorrow"? "who died of shame"?
  • "The whole fleet was, however, about to be lost in a storm off Cape Solanto, 10 leagues of Messina." - I'd recommend "The whole fleet, however, was nearly lost in a storm..." Hchc2009 (talk) 17:10, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(b) it complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.

Factually accurate and verifiable:

(a) it provides references to all sources of information in the section(s) dedicated to the attribution of these sources according to the guide to layout;

(b) it provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons—science-based articles should follow the scientific citation guidelines;

(c) it contains no original research.

Broad in its coverage:

(a) it addresses the main aspects of the topic;

(b) it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).

Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without bias, giving due weight to each.

  • Is there any more information on how the Ottomans responded to the battle? At the moment it is very much an account from the Spanish/Hapsburg perspective. If there were any more Ottoman sources, it would be great if they could be included. 17:10, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.

Illustrated, if possible, by images:

(a) images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content;

  • File:Battle Spanish Ottomans.jpg. If attributed to Cornelis de Wael, a date could be safely added to the file description.
  • File:Duke of Osuna.jpg needs the templates filling in, including the date of death for the author if life + 70 is being claimed. Hchc2009 (talk) 10:07, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(b) images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.

  • Captions need checking for periods ("."); only full, complete sentences should end in a period.
