Redundance
[edit]Kill does not mean river in English. Only in English, there is no redundance. This sort of a situation is true for a good many place names; typically one does not regard or present them as mixed or redundant names or attempt to restore the name in a foreign language. One simply regards the name as an Anglicised foreign term. Sometimes there is etymologic folk-speculation about its meaning. "Battenkill River" is fine English. "Batten Kill" makes you think there was lost battle and a massacre there. The next step in the folk-etymologic process is to invent one. The article should be moved to "Battenkill River". It could then present the etymology from Dutch? "kill." Where did you get that? Hearsay won't do, you need a reference. Have fun.Dave (talk) 20:22, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- The preceding assertion is incorrect, according to Merriam-Webster.
- kill (noun, often capitalized): channel, creek — used chiefly in place names in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York.
- Origin: Dutch kil; First Known Use: 1669
- "Batten Kill" may make YOU think of a certain thing or event, however, the established definition above is well known to those where it is in use. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.202.195.159 (talk) 04:44, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
