Terminology

[edit]

I have added another UK Theatre term for a batten - a 'barrell' - this page is very US orientated. In Theatre in the UK a 'batten' is always a longitudinal piece of timber used in scenic construction - not lighting (Except in exceptionally shoddy circumstance!) Just to make things more confusing, here in Canada batten refers to either or both the US or UK definition. DJSparky huh? 03:43, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems pretty straightforward that "batten" in the sense of a long piece of timber found its way into use as meaning a long piece of timber being flown to support scenery, which then became a long pipe being flown to support scenery or lights or whatever. I don't think it's necessarily a regionalism. I can't find any reference to "barrell" anywhere other than on the Wikiproject glossary for stagecraft. kmccoy (talk) 23:56, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
