Alternative to doughnut
[edit]A common alternative when a doughnut isn't available is for the on-deck batter to do warm-up swings holding 2 or more bats at once. I don't have official source for this, but everyone did it back when I played little league, and I've seen this practice depicted in movies and television many times. Probably not something the pros ever do, but it's common enough practice in amateur leagues that it deserves mention here. Anyone have an official source to quote regarding this? - Swinging two or more bats is probably as old as the bat itself! It's rough on the hands, though.
- Shortly after the iron doughnut was introduced, some players tried an alternative that involved an apparatus with four wings on it. When attached to the tip of the bat, it slowed the practice swings via wind resistance. I suspect it may heve been effective, but it looked silly, like some flying machine of old. Maybe someone can find a photograph. WHPratt (talk) 13:54, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Bad English
[edit]There is this lonely sentence in this article: "During a game, you can find the doughnut lying in the on-deck circle." The rest of the article is written in third person, so to maintain a consistent voice, so should this one - don't you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.51.66.32 (talk) 00:44, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Misleading
[edit]"A donut can help increase bat speed." It seems to me that this statement may induce a reader to think that it's some kind of aerodynamic miracle, that putting extra weight on a bat will permit it to move faster, when in fact, the whole point is dead weight. Succeeding statements explain that it's a muscle-toning thing that helps post-donut swings. A little reductio ad absurdam makes it clear that more and more weight isn't going to make the bat any faster. I'd suggest that the sentence read something like "A donut can help increase bat speed on subsequent swings," although eliminating the statement entirely would be better.
