Naming
[edit]The city was or was not named after American Red Cross Founder Clara Barton according to two anons. Does anybody have a citation one way or the other? --Dual Freq 22:21, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- It was certainly named after the Barton family who settled the area, but I doubt its named for Clara specifically. Suppafly 12:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- "The History of Bartonville" book says that it is named after the local Barton family, W.C.H. Barton.

I recently learned that my great-grandfather Collier and Mr. Barton co-owned property and a railroad stop for coal trains in Bartonville. When the town was named it was going to either be Collierville or Bartonville. I confirmed this with my aunt - Mr. Collier's granddaughter. She said when she last visited there not too many years ago the station still said Collierville on the sign. My grandfather eventually was President of a bank in Bartonville. She had no recollection of Clara Barton ever being mentioned in connection with the town. If anyone has any further historical information on this I would love to hear from them.
