[edit]I read about this man's epic journey while reading of La Pérouse's voyage. Much of the text outside the "Trans-continental journey" section is from the French Wikipedia as translated by Google.
Date of birth
[edit]The original French wikipedia article shows his date of birth as being in 1766 which is supported by http://transpolair.free.fr/explorateurs/lesseps/biographie.htm. However, http://www.france-pittoresque.com/perso/28.htm shows it as being 1767 (although the month and day are consistent). The book I've read, Where Fate Beckons describes him as being "barely nineteen" at the beginning of 1785, which supports argument for 1766.
This site also gives 1766 as the year of birth. 72.66.46.71 (talk) 23:00, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Later career
[edit]The following was translated from the French article but I can't find supporting sources in English so I've removed it from the main article. Any help to allow us to put it back in would be appreciated:
The revolutionary events prevent him from travelling to Cronstadt take his post. He remained in France until 1792, when he was appointed Consul General of France in Saint-Petersburg to replace his father. In fact, the war with Russia indefinitely postponed his departure and he remained incumbent until 1801, without being able to occupy it effectively.
In 1794 he was appointed deputy his stepfather, Mr. Ruffin, secretary of the legation of France in Constantinople, who was former consul of France in Crimea and interpreter of Oriental Languages Department of Foreign Affairs. He went on a diplomatic mission on behalf of the Turkish government on January 15, 1796, with the French Republic.
With the shipment of Napoleon Bonaparte in Egypt in 1798, discontent was high against the French who were subjected to violence. He was imprisoned with his wife, his parents in law and their children at the castle of Seven-Tours for three years.
In August 1801, following the evacuation of Egypt, they were released. Upon his return to France, Bonaparte, and the First Consul, sent to Saint Petersburg to hold the Consulate General. In early 1802, he was responsible for supplying the French navy wooden construction but after the Battle of Austerlitz, the situation deteriorated. He went join Talleyrand in Warsaw, and from there went to Dresden where he met the emperor. After the peace Tilsitt, he returned to the consulate in Saint Petersburg, but in 1812 the relations with Russia were again broken; whole family had to leave.
New journey and new harassment: Kronstadt, Pilau, Königsberg, Danzig where he left his wife and children. He went to Vilnius and Moscow, where he joined Napoleon who was appointed steward of the city and province of Moscow. There reorganized the municipality and the police. Nevertheless, the military situation was such that he left Moscow with General Mortier who blew up the Kremlin. In Danzig, he left for Paris with his family in early 1813.
After the fall of the French Empire, the Restoration, he was appointed Consul General of France in Lisbon, where he died in service. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter4Truth (talk • contribs) 13:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
