Having researched the history of Haven Inn on census from 1841 to 1901; and trade directories; here are the results, of great interest to me because of my Grandmother naomi Mason ( see above), former landlady of the Haven inn: in 1841 census William Bell was the innkeeper; he hsd a wife Sarah, and a son William (age2).In 1851 census Mary Bell, widow(60) was there, daughter Mary ((30) In 1861 the landlord was Thomas Stoving, with a wife, Sophia and six children. In the 1871 census John Shephard and his wife Mary appeared. In the 1881 census the 'licensed Victualer was George Samuel Dawson, with wife and two children.According to Kelly's Directory, John Brown occupied Haven In in 1899. The census in 1901 shows Alfred Brown as Innkeeper; his father john Brown lived with him.Kelly's 1905, still shows john Brown in Haven inn (shared with son?????).Kelly's 1909 lists Alfred Brown in haven Inn. Kelly's 1919, shows alfred Brown still there. As my grandmother came there in 1922(ish). it is likely that she followed Alfred brown. When she retired 1943/4 a Mr William Walton took over. It was in the years following th war that alterations began to be made to tha appearance of the Inn. I have a painting (done in 1924) that shows a Much smaller establishment; than that which exists today.
