- Time Out for Barre Hiiraale’s Initiative
- The leader of the “Jubba Alliance”; Barre Aadan Shire also known as Barre Hiiraale made several notable mediation attempts in recent months. His objective was to bridge the political gap between Sharif Xasan and the destructive Mogadishu warlords on side and the transitional federal government (TFG) on the other. However, since the destructive Mogadishu warlords agreed to meet with the TFG unconditionally and gave the TFG unrestricted political latitude to choose its own terms and conditions for the planned meeting. I do not see the need for Barre Hiiraale to continue his mediation efforts and call for a meeting to be held in the Somali port city of Kismaayo. Needless to say, he can and should participate the planned meeting both as minister of the TFG and as representative of his region.
- It is important to bear in mind that the TFG has now permanent operational base in Jowhar and the warlords agreed to go there. Hence, the idea of going to Kismaayo for a meeting is counter productive at this moment. I understand that Kismaayo is Barre Hiiraale’s political and military base; however, going there will not yield the desired political objective for the reasons stated above. Indeed it will only create enormous logistical problems, not to mention the huge financial cost associated with it, which is needed for other far more important projects.
- Having said that, I believe Barre Hiiraale must be recognized for his efforts to bring an end to the conflict the warlords created to their peril in the first place.
More on his career with citations

Gedonet.com on the other hand reports that the Defense minister and his army confronted to opposing militias who were disputing for the control of a vehicle left behind. Apparantly, upon the Defense minister approaching them, they both united their guns towards the Defense minister and his army which forced them to defend themselves. The casualties reported numbered 10 for the combined militia and 2 for the Defense minister.
Can you provide a specific citation/reference of this? Also, clarify if Col. Hiiraale was personally involved, or whether this only involved troops loyal to the Defense Minister. --Petercorless 09:13, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
