Incorrect heraldic fur on the Bachuil's Cap of maintenance

[edit]

In the current illustration of the Bachuil coat of arms, the Cap of Maintenance (chapeau) over the shield is red cloth with ermine fur, representing its baronial status. That would be correct for most other Scots baronies, but not for the Bachuil. The Bachuil cap is red with a special heraldic fur, called vair (representing squirrel fur), and not the usual fur ermine (heraldry) in the heraldic caps of Scots barons. The Lord Lyon, Thomas Innes of Learney, acknowledged this special right because the Bachuil barons, Coarbs of the Pict St. Moluag, arose from pre-feudal times, before Scotland existed and before all other current Scots baronies. Their title and right is said to be "Grâce à Dieu", not granted by any king, being in the same category as certain very ancient continental allodial titles. The vair furred cap is described in the article text. A Bachuil cap is shewn correctly in the coat of arms illustration: https://web.archive.org/web/20160303205638/http://www.baronage.co.uk/2006a/Bachuil.pdf at page 9. The current erroneous cap with ermine fur should be replaced with the correct cap with vair fur. 172.56.91.196 (talk) 05:00, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
