Any info regarding the Hilton Hotels Corporation allowing its (persumably) trademarked name used in a movie title? --Kvasir 03:59, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Title question

[edit]

Does anyone know if the nickname Bangkok Hilton was ever in use for any actual Bangkok prison prior to this work, or did this work invent that nickname. Ever since this series, news reports and TV documentaries usually seem pretty keen to describe whichever Bangkok prison they are reporting on (be it Chang Mai, Bangkwang, Klong Prem) as having the nickname "Bangkok Hilton". Now, the same nickname can't really be applied to three different places can it? Also, book The Damage Done uses only nickname "Big Tiger" to describe the Bangkwang prison, there is no mention of any "Bangkok Hilton" nickname. Asa01 20:29, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think what you're alluding to is correct. I've recently been looking for an answer to the same question and only see the term being used by the (mainly Australian) media in recent times and in reference to any and every Thai prison. -- Iantalk 00:37, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Google News Archive http://news.google.com/archivesearch reveals no articles prior to 1989 using "Bangkok Hilton" in reference to a Bangkok prison. Format (talk) 07:38, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The term ‘The Hilton’ or the ‘Such-and-such Hilton’, used to describe lock-ups, cheap rooming houses, unsavoury hostels or even low-class share-houses has been in use in Australian youth culture since at least the '60s. I'm unsure whether this is an Australianism or not; I have been unable to find any examples from other countries. The term is common enough to have influenced the producers, but it is also true that Thai prisons may have been referred to as the ‘Bangkok Hilton’ among Australian backpackers. 124.170.18.247 (talk) 04:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am a 41 year old Australian and have never heard this usage ever, and have never even heard of it - not even on Australian TV drama or in movies. I figured the writer of this miniseries was inspired by Hanoi Hilton actually. Format (talk) 08:14, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
