Scots

[edit]

Did Scots-speakers ever call the place Talbotstoun or is that a recent coinage? Any references for that name before the 1990s? 92.11.52.106 (talk) 17:20, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It says in the "Name" section the town was known as Talbotyston as far back as 1333, so a variant of the name has clearly been in use for quite some time. I don't know how old the spelling Talbotstoun is. Most likely fairly recent. JonChappleTalk 17:26, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! But did Scots-speakers ever pronounce the ton bit /tun/? The older spelling would seem to indicate /tən/. 92.11.52.106 (talk) 21:09, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! The article also says that name became gaelicised as Ballitalbot, and as Ballihalbert by 1617. Did the Scots-speaking planters use, and pass on, a variant of that or the older name? 92.11.52.106 (talk) 21:14, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haven't the foggiest. JonChappleTalk 21:59, 7 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't matter if the name was used before the 1990s. The infobox is for modern names. Mabuska (talk) 10:38, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
